Question about car mirrors and children
Do you use a special baby mirror in your car? Do you think it's useful? I'm asking because we received 2 of them and DH thinks we should keep both- one in each car. Just wanted to hear some feedback from BTDT moms.
Thanks!

Re: Question about car mirrors and children
We don't have one in either car, but DH constantly says he wants one.
For me personally, I am afraid that if I had one, I would be watching the baby and not the road. If she is crying so hard that talking to her doesn't soothe her, I pull over (very rare, b/c the drive usually soothes her).

Re: Question about car mirrors and children
I have one, and LOVE it....
K can watch me while I'm driving, so she doesn't feel alone.
My BFF's aunt is a safety inspector for car seat installations, and she told me that they are a HUGE reason for car accidents. Parents are constantly watching their children, and not paying attention to their driving.
You just have to be careful and mindful of what you are doing while you are driving. I have trained myself to only watch her in the mirror IF I'm at a red light or stuck in a mountain of traffic.

ITA, in particular when they're still rear-facing. Otherwise, if you're the only one in the car with your baby and you're driving, you wouldn't be able to see what the baby was doing. I would definitely put one in each car that the baby's going to be in.
And ITA about the baby being able to see the driver...esp. as she got older, DD uses it to babble to me, wave at me, etc (she's still rear-facing). DD kicked it off of the headrest the other day (she's 15 months, first time it's happened) and I was so frustrated that I couldn't see her, and she was frustrated that she couldn't see me.
To me, it's an absolute must in the car with rear-facing babies.
ETA: I've never been too distracted by it to concentrate on the road thankfully, but I do see the possibility of it happening, just like using a cell phone, changing the radio station, etc.

No. I registered for one but my brother made me take it off. He's a cop and has responded to accidents where the baby was injured by it.

Just curious...in what way? what happened? Mine also didnt fit correctly so I never had one but I also thought to myself that if there was an accident something bad could happen. Like that mirror shattering. Can you share?

He said that more than once he's seen them fly off and hit the baby in the head. Since I never had one I have no idea if they were just installed wrong or if it's a design flaw.
He's a little over the top with kids and car safety to be honest, like he gets mad at me if they have jackets on in the carseats. But his first day on the job he was driving to work and there was a bad accident right in front of him on the Belt where a toddler wasn't in a seat and was ejected through the windshield. So I guess since he's seen REALLY horrible things he is over protective about it all.

Re: Question about car mirrors and children
we got one from shower and then the car seat check people said it wasnt approved to have in cars and is known to be more of a danger if in accident, so we returned. So never ended up using one. I might use one with this baby b/c dd will be in back with him/her and would like to make sure dd doesnt do any harm by accident to baby.

Same here. The police officer said that it's too tempting to look at the baby and not the road. I totally agree and feel this is how many accidents happen, even if you glance back for a split second.

Re: Question about car mirrors and children
Nope, don't use them. If I have a concern, then I get off the road to check on them (pull into a parking lot, side street, etc.)

Re: Question about car mirrors and children
they are not reccomended for use by the police. I have seen a lot of minor car accidents in which the baby wold have been fine if it wasn't for the mirror. During impact they can fly off and hit the baby in the head.
Any police department you go to, if you have your car seat installed will reccomend you not to use one.

We did not use them either for this reason.
The guy of the Nassau County Safety Council told us no mirror in case we were in an accident.

We had them in both cars and LOVED them. We put them off to the side on an angle so it would not pose a safety problem if in an accident

Re: Question about car mirrors and children
I never had one for DD#1 and didn't miss it nor feel it was necessary. I did purchase one when DD#2 was 3 mos. only because we were driving to North Carolina. I didn't feel it posed an accident risk, but I also didn't think it was so great either. I kept it in until she went forward facing, but didn't feel it was a necessity at all. As she got bigger, she eventually started kicking it out of place so 9 times out of 10 I couldn't see her anyway!
I had never thought of it before, but yeah, I could see how it could be a distraction on the road for the driver.

Re: Question about car mirrors and children
I couldn't live without it. DD hated the car in the beginning and still sometimes gets very upset in the car. I use it to see exactly how upset she is. And she used to gag so I would use it to see if she actually got sick so I would pull over.
Now that she's not as bothered by the car I use it to see her and talk to her.

We have this one as well. I feel much better being able to see the baby (when I am stopped at a light, etc) than when I can't see him.

Re: Question about car mirrors and children
If you use a mirror with a loop, and put the headrest post through the loop, it can't go anywhere. In that case, your pocketbook, rattle, notebook (especially the metal ones that police officers have on the seat next to them....) are all hazardous projectiles in an accident.
Without a mirror, is your child being quiet because they are sleeping, or because they are choking on something? IMO, a properly installed mirror is a potential life saver.

Same here. The way my car is, it doesn't stay inplace and I can't see him. BUT he loves to look at himself in it so we still have it in the car!
