Question about Colic? (Kinda Long)
I'm not sure yet, but I think Shane might have Colic. He is just about 3 weeks old and that is when the Ped says it usually starts. He is usually fine all day but the last two nights have been horrible. Saturday night he wouldn't stop crying. I fed him, changed him, rocked him, nothing worked. He would stop crying for short periods of time, and then tense him whole body and start screaming. We thought it might be gas and gave him Mylicon drops the next day. He was wonderful all day and slept. Last night was another awful night. He started screaming and didn't stop for over 3 hours. By about 2pm, he finally feel asleep and has been great since. The only other thing I can think of is I'm not producing enough milk in the evening. I'm thinking he might be hungry. I usually supplement with one bottle a day, but I strictly BF yesterday. I'm going to try one bottle at night. Another suggestions the Ped gave was to cut out all dairy from my diet. Since it might be a allergy to cows milk. I'm really hoping it isn't Colic!! Any suggestions?

Re: Question about Colic? (Kinda Long)
I'm not sure but from what I remember babies with colic cry all day, not just at night. I too had to cut all dairy and all foods with vitamin C out of my diet. My DD was in so much pain from them. Tensing up his whole body sound more like pain than hunger to me. When my DD was like that I'd sometimes give her a bit of warm water (like 1/2 to 1 ounce) in her bottle and then massage her belly a bit (I would boil some water and then keep it in the fridge in case I needed it then warm it as necessary). Sometimes it helped bring up the gas. Mylicon and Gripe Water were life savers for us too. Good luck, I know how frustrating that can be.

Re: Question about Colic? (Kinda Long)
I thought babies who had colic cried all day and night, not just at night. DS cried for several hours at night for a few months. He was great during the day, but was very fussy from dinner time until around midnight. He's 3 months old and much better now.
When you give him a bottle, do you pump at all? If you're supplementing, that could affect your supply. He could've been crying b/c he was still hungry or he could've been affected by something you ate. It's also possible that he's just fussy at night from all of the stimulation during the day. I hope things get better for you soon.

Re: Question about Colic? (Kinda Long)
My colicky DD was a fuss pot all day but really turned it on at night. I can empathize with what you are beginning to go through.
Some of the things that worked for us were: -a white noise machine (or any similar continuous noise like the bathroom fan or the vacuum cleaner) -5 S's from the Happiest Baby on the Block -gripe water took the edge off sometimes
I also BF and had the same thought about a dairy allergy. My ped told me not to expect to see results over night with that. He said it could take up to a week or so to see if that is really the problem.

Have you tried Gripe Water?
I have friends that swear by it instead of the Micolin drops.

Re: Question about Colic? (Kinda Long)
Don't think my DS was colic- but he cried at night, had a hell period of crying for hours.. I tried and this all helped:
Swaddling white noise machine/vacuum holding him and bouncing on an exercise ball (Bonus: lost my pregnancy weight this way) Walking around the house with him in the stroller
GL- my baby was fine and calm by the 4th month- and sleeping though the night too!

Re: Question about Colic? (Kinda Long)
Thanks for all the suggestions!! I already use a White noise Machine and I swaddle him at night. I had alot of visitors yesturday so maybe it was from over stimulation. I cut out all dairy today, to see if that will work. I'm hoping for the best tonight. I thought babies who had Colic cried all day too, but from what the Ped said and what I read, they could just have certain periods during the day that they cry. I really hope it isn't Colic!! I'm still confused about giving a bottle at night. I keep reading up on it, and it seems it might slow down my milk supply. The Ped seemed to think it was a good idea. Not sure what to do.

If you give a bottle at night, I would pump that milk. I wouldn't let that feeding go or else your supply will be compromised. Do you have a pump? Ideal situation is to have DH do the bottle feeding while you pump.

Re: Question about Colic? (Kinda Long)
Have you heard of the video or book Happiest Baby on the Block? It teaches you all those cool tricks to calm a crying baby...swaddling, white noise, etc. Look into it - it really, really kept me sane (kind of) during those tough weeks!
Good luck

Re: Question about Colic? (Kinda Long)
We had a cranky baby starting at that age in the evenings too. I finally added a small bottle of formula (2 oz) and he has been fine ever since. I only give it too him AFTER he feds on both sides TWICE so I know it doesn't affect my supply.
I hope that helps. It looked like gas pains too so it may be hunger.

Re: Question about Colic? (Kinda Long)
My son was colic for 5-6 months. Most peds say it ends at 3 months??? He had to go on alimentum formula. We tried everyhting. Dont laugh, but sitting him in a swing in front of the washing machne and dryer- worked. he loved the noise and it put him to sleep. ALso, the vaccum cleaner noise worked too. We had a white noise machine too t and the swing helped . Happi Tummi from one step ahead helped alittle Image Attachment(s):
