question about doing taxes

I got married last year and now, DH and I are trying to figure out the best way to do our taxes: Married - filing separately vs. Married - fililng jointly.

We were considering going to an accountant but saw that Turbo Tax offers a package where you can try both ways before finalizing.

Has anyone else decided what they are going to do?

Any advice or opinions on the matter would be greatly appreciated!

Re: question about doing taxes

I have done my taxes on Turbo Tax the past few years (mainly cause I have nothing to claim). Now that I'm married and DH claims more than I do I wanted to see it both ways as well.

I think you can go through everything on Turbo Tax without paying and see how it comes out. I'm debating going to an accountant - I would like to but I don't know any.

Re: question about doing taxes

I'm an accountant and I'm say its pretty rare to file separately, unless you have some unique situations.

Married filing jointly offers the most tax savings in most cases, especially when spouses have different income levels.

There is a potential advantage to filing separately if one spouse has significant medical expenses or miscellaneous itemized deductions.

I'd try both ways but you'll probably end up filing jointly.

Re: question about doing taxes

We just did our taxes last night with Turbo Tax and they recommended married-filing jointly, so that's what we did.

If you did not change your name yet, than just let the accountant know that. Your tax return will get bounced back if the name on the tax return does not match the name that is on file with Social Security.

You can bring your marriage certificate with you if you think that they will question that you are definitely married.

It doesn't have to. Yours probably says single because that's what you have on your W-4.

I used turbo tax and tried separately and together. We got the same number so we filed jointly.
