Question about fever/infection

Maybe this is a really dumb question but can a toddler have a fever without an infection? Ava has had a pretty high fever today and yesterday with a really bad cough. I took her to the dr. today and they said her ears and lungs were clear and they sent us home with cough medicine. She still has the fever and is so out of it. The reason i ask the question is because everytime she has had a fever she has had an infection so I feel like there is something else going on. I wonder if i should have asked for a throat culture? What do you think?

Call back and ask. I think it is not unreasonable to want a throat culture.
