question about Lent
if you follow, do you not eat meat on fridays? all fridays, not just Good Friday.
also, if you gave something up, do you give it up for the whole duration?
I ask b/c a woman in my office literally makes her own rules. she has meat on fridays b/c on Good Firday is when you are supposted to give it up?
she cake up sweets, but eats it on Sunday.
there is no use explaining b/c she is stubborn. it get amusing.

She is totally wrong about the Good Friday thing. It's no meat EVERY Friday for ALL of Lent.
As for the Sunday thing, some people make the exception, but it's usually for the elderly.
Very religious Catholics won't eat meat on any Friday.

there is no use explaining b/c she is stubborn. it get amusing. I have come to discover that everyone makes up their own rules....
BUT...if you give something up it is supposed to be for the 40 days.
You are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays during Lent & going to church on Sunday does not absolve rule-breaking the other 6 days
(ETA: I am not catholic but this was a HUGE arguement at MILs house last week when she found out DH had steak on Friday & dit not "give anything up" for Lent.)

Re: question about Lent
i'm not quite as dedicated as my sister...she does not eat meat on fridays all during Lent and she gives up chocolate (her fav thing) all during that time.
i don't have that kind of dedication.

If she is in her 60's then she is old enough to remember the old rules before they changed everything with the Vat II council. Before Vat II you could NEVER eat meat on Fridays & could not eat meat at all during Lent, not just on the Fridays.

i think its a combination of the age and the fact that she makes her own rules to fit her needs.

FYI - PG women do not have to follow lent
i dont remember reading that in the Bible but i'll take your word for it!
as for me, i dont eat meat on fridays at all during lent (although DH tried to convince me that pepperoni isnt meat and that we should have a pepperoni pizza for dinner!). i also fast on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Good Friday is more serious cause i only eat 1 meal the whole day which is usually dinner. I didnt give up anything for lent this year because i just didnt want to. God will forgive me.

I was PG last year for Lent and the Priest told me I was excused because it is a medical condition.

The 40 days is how long Jesus was in the dessert. He returned on Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday where the extra 7 days comes from.
It must have been on LIW where someone was saying that Sundays are not counted as part of the 40 days between Ash Wednesday & Easter but that makes no sense.

.
Some people have been taught that Sunday is ok to eat /drink, etc, what you gave up. It's semi controversial--but some people do that.
My (non church-going) parents gave up on the no meat after a while, but would still do it on Good Friday--sort of as an observation of a holiday.

Re: question about Lent
I do no meat on Fridays during lent and then on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday I fast - basically no snacking between small meals.
I gave up cakes, cookies and all candy and it's f'ing killing me. I allowed myself a break on St. Patrick's day when I made a pig of myself.
I am counting the days till Easter Sunday.....

ALL Lenten Fridays are no meat.
I was raised with the "sundays" rule.
