Question for BF moms re 2 week old feeding habits

My DD was a slow eater and would go 15 mins/side every 3 hours, so this is new to me... DS is totally different...he has a strong latch and eats SO fast. He basically goes 7-10 minutes on 1 side, then is out cold ...then 1.5-2.5 hours later he's up again to eat. Lots of dirty & wet diapers, so I think he's getting enough, just wondering if I should try harder to get him to eat more at once, or if his grazing on demand is ok. I def feel emptier on the side he eats from after he's done.

He's also gassy and seems to spit up if I do get him to take both sides in one feeding...

Not sure if this answers your question, but I wouldn't push him to eat from the other side if it is just going to cause him to spit up. My DD almost always nurses one side per feeding. I just alternate sides each feeding or feel which one is fuller if I forget what side I fed from last. At 6 months she is healthy and happy. Sometimes I am a bit lopsided but that's the worst of it.

Yes, I guess my question was is it ok to only feed 1 side/ feeding. I do switch sides each time...though occasionally stay on 1 side until he drains it so that he gets the hind milk, if he didn't drain it at the previous feeding.

I think if he's content after one side then there's no need to force it. If he's gassy when you have him switch it could be that he's getting too much foremilk. He's also so young, his habits may change many times in the next few weeks and months.

If you're only offering 1 side at a time; I think you are to offer that same side at the beginning of t he feeding so that he can drain the milk. I used to do that with DS. Latch him back onto the same side; and then usually have to switch him to the other.

This, except my DS is 5 months.

He was a lot like your DS sounds. Was never really a very long nurser and would do 1 side at a time or else he would spit up a ton. Also dealt with gassiness (still do but it doesn't seem to bother him anymore). Just follow his cues. If diaper output is good and he seems otherwise happy and thriving don't worry!

The plus side is as he got even MORE efficient, now he can nurse in like 5 minutes and be good for 3 hours. If he does nurse now for longer (10-15 min) it can last him 3.5-4 hours at a time.
