question for runners

I have been running for almost 2 weeks now and my legs hurt sooo bad.

I don't just mean that they feel soar, its like I bruised my ones.

Its not the front of my shin bone, but the side of both of my shin bones. They hurt so bad that I can barely touch them with my fingers.

Any idea what I did to myself or how to fix it? Does it sound like shin splints even though its not the fron of my legs?

TIA

Re: question for runners

Shin splints.. you may need to invest in better running sneakers.

What you can do to help them is freeze water in those paper dixie cups, once frozen you can peel back the paper and rub the ice up and down your shin at night... also when you go out running try and stay on soft surface like the grass until it starts to heal.. with the weather now it may be hard to do this since everything is hard and frozen. How about trying to run on a rubber track.. thats probable your best bet or sand at the beach.

also make sure you are warming up properly and stretching before and after runs.

I agree with the above poster, how are your sneakers? I wore snaekers thta were to small for me when I first started running. I went to a running store and they told me to get a size bigger and havent had any of those problem since.

Thanks for the info. I just went and did the istep, where they see where you put the most pressure on your feet and then they pick out the best sneakers for you.

So I ran with my new sneakers yesterday for 30 minutes on the school track and my legs are in so much pain. I also ice them everyday when I get home from a run.

Will I get passed this, or will this happen every time I run? I am getting a bit discouraged.

Re: question for runners

Are you running on the road? How often are you running? When you first start out your legs aren't used to the impact. You need to slowly build into it and get your body used to the pounding. If you have an option to road on dirt or the track that would be better. Hang in there.

Thank you. I have been running 6 days a week for 2 weeks almost and I am running on the road. I will try and switch to the track around the block from my house. Hoping its just because I am just starting

Re: question for runners

It sounds to me like you are overtraining. I would try to cut it back to 4 days a week, if possible. Especially since you are just starting. Also, on the days that you are not running you really should be strengthening your hamstrings and hip flexors.

Yeah, honestly, 6 days is WAY too much for just starting. You should be doing 3, at most 4 days of running and even then, a few miles. Your ligaments are not used to it yet.

yeah I agree I think you might be doing too much too soon. I've been running regularly for a while now & my body still can't handle more than 4 days a week without my knees killing me. I suggest giving it a rest between running days & maybe doing some strengthening work on the days in between and don't forget to stretch.
Also be careful with your form... I was having some CRAZY pain in my shins... turns out I had a stress fracture... but I wasn't landing properly with each step... once I started landing on my heel and rolling forward the right way, I haven't had the shin pain. The right sneakers are important too like the other ladies mentioned to help absorb the impact. Good luck.

I agree.
You can also "exercise" your shins on your non-running days. While sitting down, use your foot to "write" the alphabet in the air. This is good exercise for your shins and you can do it anywhere.. while at work, on the train, at home at the dnner table, etc.

Re: question for runners

If it is shinsplints (sounds like it) - try running on grass...either the fields of a school or the inside of the track would work

I can easily get shin splints with a different brand of shoe.

Re: question for runners

As a new runner myself, the BEST thing to do is to go onto Hal Higdon's website and download a novice training program. It prevented me from overtraining and helped to put me in the right drection - it is nice and structured!

Re: question for runners

I'm adding a vote to the " you have shin splints - you've been doing too much, too soon" team.

Running is really hard on your body - your muscles as well as your joints and tendons. You have to give your body time to adjust. But it will. Think how many tens of thousands of people in the U.S. run marathons. If they can run 26+ miles, you can work your way up and run farther and faster. Just give it time. Feel better! And keep icing those legs.
