Question re: Political Parties

Just curious, are you part of the same political party as your parents? Both my husband and I are not--he is Independent, I am a Democrat. Our parents are Republicans. Their parents however, were Democrats.

Many of my friends seem to be in a different party than their parents as well. Just wondering if this is true across the board.

Re: Question re: Political Parties

I was raised by very liberal democrats and am a democrat. DH's family is culturally liberal but fiscally conservative. DH was a registered republican for years but recently switched his affiliation to democrat.

Re: Question re: Political Parties

I'm registered republican as my parents are. However, I've been reconsidering this since I really don't ascribe to the republican ideals.

Re: Question re: Political Parties

My parents are democrats - my mom worked for Bobby Kennedy and my dad worked for Martin Luther King Jr. I'm a democrat as well.

DH's parents are republicans (I think). He's an independent, but votes democrat more often than not.

Re: Question re: Political Parties

My mom is a registered Democrat and I was until recently where I changed to Independent.

DH is a registered Republican.

We both struggle with liking things about both parties, so it's hard for any of us to say we are explicitly one party.

Re: Question re: Political Parties

I agree, I'm registered Democrat (because that's how I tend to vote), but there are things about the party I don't like.

It's funny, this election year I have had the best conversations about the election with my father (without arguing since we are two of the more political family members). He likes some things about my candidate, but thinks he's too liberal. I like some things about his candidate, but will not vote for him now that he has a more socially conservative agenda. I remember him getting so mad when he heard I was voting for Clinton (Bill).

Re: Question re: Political Parties

I am the opposite of Alex P. Keaton. My family are right-wingers, voted for Bush twice (THANKS A LOT!) and will vote McCain.

This is different from how I was raised though. I was raised that Democrats are the party of the regular working people, and my grandmother would take me to the voting booth with her when I was very young and tell me to hit to buttons for democrats all down the line.

But ever since the religious right took over the republican party and started making elections about "culture wars", the word "liberal" has become a dirty word in my house, and you HAVE to vote pro-life. Chat Icon

I think if my family members looked at all of the issues, they wouldn't be so adamantly republican as voters, but what i feel are the manipulation tactics of the right have worked.

Re: Question re: Political Parties

My parents were liberal Democrats. My mom, not as liberal as my dad. I WAS off the deep end liberal in college and soon after college (I joined PETA, protested everything) really subscribed to the ultra left wing liberal ideology. I lived it for YEARS and know how that party works. I even volunteered for "rock the vote" and was a staunch Clinton Supporter...for YEARS.

DH is a libertarian. More of a conservative on abortion only, but a libertarian on EVERYTHING ELSE. He went to Reed College in Oregon, which is REALLY off the deep end liberal. His parents were/are Democrats.

After I met DH, and both of us left a very liberal colleges (me - FIT; DH - Reed) we realized a lot of things about the liberal democratic party that we really disagreed with.

Both of us became Christians soon after we meet and that shaped our thoughts about a lot of stuff going on in the democratic party. The biggest change for me, was my thoughts on abortion. After watching people in my family and friends struggle to conceive for years I changed my mind. Plus what happened with Clinton being unable to keep his d!c k in his pants, Hillary's health care overhaul, and how people who opposed them somehow ended up dead???? Too many things that they did inside the democratic party and to the country that made me change my mind.

PLus, my heart condition has a lot to do with it too (I cannot have anymore children). Universal health care scares the $hit out of me. I mean, my surgeon is in demand because he is the BEST on the East coast and people come from Europe (Where THEY HAVE universal heath care) and come to HIM to get their heart surgery done because he is the best. TRUST ME, when you are facing life or death surgery YOU WANT someone at the top of their game, not someone who was a B or C student in med school. If we have universal health care, my fear is that the BEST doctors would leave the US and go somewhere else to practice.

Unless you have LIVED through a life or death issue you cannot possible understand. I mean God forbid you had a child with a heart condition...WHO do you want to open up your child's chest and operate on their heart? A doctor who scraped by in med school and barely passed his boards?? NO WAY. I assume you would want one of THE BEST surgeons in the country, if not the world.

Just my two cents for whatever it's worth...

Re: Question re: Political Parties

My parents are registered Democrats, as am I.

If DH were a citizen he would be a democrat, but he isn't, so he votes green (Australian political party) and his parents usually vote Labour (like Democrats).

What is really strange here is they have a Liberal party, but they are equal to the Republican party. Chat Icon . Confuses me every time.

Re: Question re: Political Parties

I'm not register with a party, but I straddle the middle, but lean slightly to either the left or liberterian sides.

My mom was a hard core Dem. Worked for the Dem party in the 70s

My dad is a fiscal conservative.

Dh is liberal and his mom is the polar opposite.

Re: Question re: Political Parties

My mom can't vote but they are (surprisingly) hard core dems. My brother and I are Reps, actually my brother is much more liberal since meeting his wife. So I am the lone wolf Chat Icon

That is what makes me laugh with all of these comments about the "religious" and "Christians" and all that bc my parents are as Catholic as you can get and yet still can't understand why I am a Rep!

They call me the "princess" when they talk about it Chat Icon
