Questions for Nikon SLR users...
I ordered a D40 online on Black Friday. Today someone from the website called and told me that I NEED to upgrade the battery to a 4-hour one (apparently it comes with a 1-hour), and I NEED a 4 GB high speed memory card to take fast pictures and hold enough.
Is all of this true? I don't want to be taken advantage of, and I've never owned an SLR before.

Re: Questions for Nikon SLR users...
I was never called to upgrade my battery. Is that a Nikon battery?
You DON'T have to get a 4GB card. I have a 2GB but you have to download and empty it regularly. I guess it is more convenient to have a 4GB.

Re: Questions for Nikon SLR users...
I bought my mom a spare battery for her D40. I don't know anything about a spare battery. I did buy her a 4GB card so she doesn't have multiple cards.
Check the prices at www.bhphotovideo.com before you buy accessories.

Do the memory cards need to be high speed? I have a few that aren't high speed already, but I'm not sure if I need the high speed.
He said that the battery that it comes with isn't good enough, and I should upgrade to the 4-hour battery.

Re: Questions for Nikon SLR users...
My D60 came with the regular nikon battery. My husband has the D40 and it's the same battery. They both last forever so I can't imagine you would need another one!

That sounds strange to me. What type of battery are they offering? The battery that came with the D40 kit is sufficient, but you should keep a spare as the charge does get shorter. I'd rather have 2 spare batteries than 1 large one.
I'm not sure which one I bought her. It should be high-speed, but something doesn't sound right.
I would see what you get with the camera. Is the store a known store? I find it strange that they would call you & insist you buy accessories because the standard isn't good enough.

It was abes of maine (http://www.abesofmaine.com), which had good online ratings.
This is the extended battery they are trying to sell me, and he didn't send me the exact link to the 4 GB high speed card.
He was trying to convince me that it's a special promotion to add on these things for $100 more.

My battery for my D40x is standard and it last a long time. Way longer than 1 hour.
I *thinkg* some SD cards are faster but then do your research. You don't have to buy them where you bought your camera and a lot of places have specials all the time.

That's what I thought. It's not a Nikon battery.
Personally with the price of the camera I don't buy anything that is not Nikon. I don't want to void my warranties. But that's me!

I would decline
just sounds like a sales pitch to me
DH has the D50 and the battery it came with lasts a VERY long time. way more than an hour. even with heavy use, it can last for days.

I won't buy anything but a Nikon battery too. I don't think it would void the warranty but the camera was manufactured to be used with the Nikon battery.

Thanks so much for all the advice! I'll turn down this "package deal."
Should I buy a high-speed memory card, or would a regular card be sufficient?

I have no problems with my "regular" SD cards.

Ahhh Abes of Maine!!! LOL They are notorious for doing this. They will hound you just say no thank you. Its the price you have to pay for getting a good price.
Do a google search for Abes of Maine reviews you'll see.

Re: Questions for Nikon SLR users...
High Speed memory cards is exactly what it sounds like. It will allow you to save/preview pictures faster after a shot. Not sure how the difference in terms of speed if you were using a regular memory card.

Re: Questions for Nikon SLR users...
This happened to my husband with a point and shoot at a different online retailer. They are just trying to make an extra buck. I have the D60 and have found the one battery to be fine, even when I went on vacation and used it all day. I charge it at night.

I think it depends on the type of photography you plan on doing. If you will be doing mostly still life, family portraits, with the occasional sports event, normal card will be fine. If you will be doing fast action shots (soccer, tennis, etc), you would want to get a faster card. But really, a normal card is fine.

I buy memory cards at buy.com - they are very inexpensive there.
I shoot small weddings and use a regular card, and its fine!!

I have had my D40 since September and I think I've had to charge the battery twice! And I take pics every day. Also, I have a 2 gig memory card and its fine. Holds over 400 pics.

Did you order from Abes of Maine? We got the same call after we placed our order on black friday. We opted to get the additional battery and 4GB memory card and they upgraded our carry case for free. We got everything yesterday and the bag is NICE!! Tell them you want an upgrade on the bag.
The camera is freaking awesome!!!

Re: Questions for Nikon SLR users...
Wow, I never heard of an internet ordering calling up to upgrade! I wouldn't though, I never heard of a 1-hour battery I have the battery my D50 came wtih and never had an issue. I also have a 1 GB memory card and it MORE than enough for me - on my setting it hold almost 800 pictures! How many more do I want at one time?? I usually download to my computer often, so I don't like keeping pictures on the memory card.
