I too was going to suggest AAA and Hertz. I've paid more for a car (slightly) but the savings on a car seat made it worth it.
I don't have AAA! Whomp whomp

Re: Quick WWYD poll re: traveling with toddlers
We got the cheap/light weight cosco sceneras, we were able to fit two in one car seat bag and we checked them at the gate. Our regular seats are very heavy and these aren't bad to have around as a spare for grandma's car or whoever.

Do not check in at all.
I would bring them on the plane or buy one when you get there or rent one (though renting you can guarantee that there weren't in an accident)
ETA: checking a car seat can cause problems because they throw them around the seat can most likely get damaged.
How would you go about buying one down there? How would you get to the store if you don't have car seats? It's not like they sell car seats in the airport.
this is true this would only work if someone could bring you them when you got there I didn't really think about that.
Really then you should just bring them on the plane.
There is no way I'm doing that! I get pissed watching people try to shove their crap in the over head compartment so I can't imagine how people will feel being held up because my fat ass is in the middle of the aisle while I'm trying to install a car seat! I'm either checking with my luggage or renting. I'm not lugging the car seats around an airport and then installing them on the plane. That is madness. Thinking about uninstalling/reinstalling in the truck alone is making me sweat!
Yeah fuk that shit. I'd rather just not travel at all until they are out of carseats than do that. The thought alone gives me stress!

I'd buy 2 of those $40 cosco seats when you get there and then donate them when you're done. $80 to not have to deal with this is a bargain, IMO.
ETA where are you going? As far as getting the seats to the airport, if it's in the US, can you just order 2 seats for store pickup at the nearest place and send your DH for them while you wait at the airport (or vice versa)? I mean, I don't know that I could handle 3 kids alone in an airport but I'd rather chase them for an hour than plop them in the puke of the last kid who rode in the rental seat.

Re: Quick WWYD poll re: traveling with toddlers
I personally don't rent carseats. Most importantly because I do not know what condition they are in/if they are safe but also because I just skeeve using something for my child that's been used by who knows how many people. My friends that have rented have said that they have been filthy dirty and disgusting.
I've always just used the carseat on the plane so never had to check it. They also sell wheeley carts for car seats (Go Go Babyz is one brand) or a strap that you can attach the carseat to your luggage to make going through the airport easier.

My DH ended up making the call. He said he didn't give a crap what it cost, he was not lugging car seats. So that was that. We rented from Hertz. They were the Cosco ones. They looked like they were brand new. There wasn't a speck of mushed cheerio anywhere. No complaints.
