? re: baby's birth certificate
I got married in February and have yet to change my last name.
Were you able to put your married last name (even if it's not changed) on your baby's birth certificate or do I have to change my last name before I give birth?
TIA!

Re: ? re: baby's birth certificate
I'm in a similar situation and wondering the same thing! i've been married for over 2.5 years and have yet to change my name! Don't ask LOL However, I am on DH's insurance they have me under my married name for that. So all doctor's paperwork will be using my married name. I'm just not sure how that effects things because my name isn't officially changed, like on my drivers license, etc. Hopefully it's not a problem down the line!!

Re: ? re: baby's birth certificate
I think they ask for both the mother's maiden name and married last name on the paperwork. I think you'll be fine.

Re: ? re: baby's birth certificate
Do you mean you havent gotten to change it with social security and DMV? What name did you make your married name on your wedding license? Whatever that says *is* your "legal" married name. If you mean that you didn't change your name on your marriage license/certificate but plan to apply to the courts for a legal name change, then no you can't. But if your marriage certificate says your new name, that you can of course use.

Re: ? re: baby's birth certificate
I believe that they baby usually takes the daddy's last name anyway - so I dont think it will matter. My sister has two kids with her fiance and they have his last name - she still has her maiden name.
Edited bc I just realized you were asking about YOUR name, lol. I would def try to change it before giving birth bc it could be a hassle to deal with later on getting it changed. If your admitted as Kim Jones I dont think you would be able to but Kim Johnson on the birth cert. ya know?

My marriage license has my husband's last name as my new last name. but i havent changed it with SS or DMV. so then I can use my married name even though it's not on any of my ID's?

Yes, absolutely. If your marriage certificate has your "new" last name, that *is* your actual, legal name.
In NY, you are allowed to use any name you want as your last name as long as you are not trying to defraud anyone in its use.
(Usually you stay consistent, but in the case of a marriage, it's completely up to you when you want to change the rest of your legal documents. The only exception is if you have income/accounts under a name that does not match your SS # because the IRS may flag you for unmatched names and send you a letter to fix it so they can tax you appropriately.)
So it's OK that you're still using your maiden name on all your documents. That does not change the fact that your "legal" name is actually what it now says on your marriage certificate. So you're totally fine! No worries!
