Are you reading a chapter or a whole book?

Captain Underpants was big at that age (slightly inappropriate but boys loved it).

Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing

James & the Giant Peach

I used to read an illustrated copy of the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere by Longfellow, but I would do it fast and with lots of drama as it moves along at almost a horse's galloping pace if you do. Kids loved it as it was unexpected, and it is an exciting tale.

About halfway through, one would usually ask suspiciously - Is this a poem? Well, yes, it is. Isn't it great?

I'd sometimes point out that much rap music is poetry also, then I'd dive back into energetically reading.

I like the Jan Thomas Books since the kids can be interactive with them.

Can You Make a Scary Face?

What Will Fat Cat Sit On?

All Mo Willems books are great...They all love Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed.

I loooove Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. A chapter from those books makes the kids laugh. But you might have to reword a few words here and there because it's so old and uses strange terms.

They'll love it if you can try to change your voice to match the different characters. :)

At that age, I loved sideways stories from wayside school. You could read the intro then just one or two other chapters.
