Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old
My son has been having stomach issues for almost a year now. He has been complaining of stomach pain, has really bad gas, and has trouble holding him #2 in (though its not loose).
He has had bloodwork, which showed no allergies, scratch test which showed no allergies, hes had an endoscopy and colonoscopy, tried different medicines, tried probiotics, currently we have eliminated all dairy from his diet (2 weeks in).
The ped feels that its all because of milk, the gastro does not really think there is a milk allergy.
The dairy free does not seem to be helping him...he told me today that his teacher asked him if his belly was feeling better, and he told her yes, but just so she would not feel bad
He has been completely potty trained since 24 months, poo-poo potty trained since well before that.
I am at a complete loss. I am sick of him having to feel like this, sick of having to clean it up, sick of him having to feel embarassed...
Any advice? Any experience? Thanks so much!

Have you taken him to a gastro-enterologist? I would take him to one for another opinion. Sometimes a specialist will catch things that others miss. Also, how much milk are you giving him? DD has a mild milk allergy. Through the doctors encouragement I give small (monitored amounts of milk). She can have one 6 oz glass of milk a day. More than that she starts to have issues (stomach pain, rash). Could you try giving measured amounts of milk and see if that helps? For my DD she can eat cheese, and have cooked milk products, it is only milk where she has issues. But even still I do monitor her dairy intake as in excess she has stomach issues as well.

Thank you for responding. We have taken him to a gastro, and still no helpful answers. He hasnt had a cup of milk in well over 2 months (switched to almond milk) and have eliminated all dairy for 2 weeks...I know it takes time to see an improvement, but we have not seen anything :(

Im so sorry hes going through that. My mother has a lot of stomach problems, she ended up having Celiac. I'm sure theyve tested him for that but i will find out what kind of doctors she saw.

Does he drink a lot of juice? When I was little if I had alot of juice whether fresh or juice boxes I would have incredibly bad stomach issues. It took years for everyone to figure out it was the juice and not milk.

Someone mentioned juice above, so maybe it is a fructose intolerance or malabsorption? Your son's symptoms sound similar to my friend's who has it. The test is a hydrogen breath test to diagnose it.
Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.

Re: Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old
Have you tried an elimination diet? Take the majority of his food out for 2 weeks back to very basics and see if you notice any change. DD#1 ended up with hive but she had tummy issues etc that came and went. She got better once we did that. We did have to allergy test her butby taking most things out you could see that way. Maybe it is a preservative or dye allergy.
We went down to start:
Chicken (made drumsticks) carrots plain baked potatoes ( would slice and bake with olive oil on a cookie sheet in the oven) turkey apples bananas apple juice soy milk think we gave her cheerios
Once she did okay we slowly worked in one thing for 3 days at a time.
Eggs pasta grapes pears etc.
You have nothing to loose by trying it other than maybe not being crazy about the diet. I noticed more normal stool and less stomach aches within about 3-5 days. Also avoid processed foods when you can.
I would try another ped gastro for a second opinion. No one should have to go through that. He might not have an allergy but maybe intolerences instead.
What does he normally eat? Can kids that young get IBS or crohns?

I would nix the juice and see if that helps. My son used to get stomach issues from apple juice and any kind of juicy juice when he was little. I cut that out and he was fine.

Re: Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old
I know you said you are two weeks into eliminating dairy, but it does take some time for the body to get it out of the system. I'd go a few more weeks before giving up. Also, I know you said he tested negative for celiac, but he could still have gluten intolerance without it showing up on a test. I would also eliminate all gluten (along with corn and soy) to see if that helps. Good luck!

The drs were never able to figure out what was in the juice that I had problems with but I would have really bad stomach pains, gas, and sometimes uncontrollable bowel movements. I remember the stomach pains. To this day if I drink too much juice I'm in the bathroom all day. I have a slight intolerance to dairy but too much fruit juice is my enemy.

thank you so much for sharing...these seem to be the symptoms my son has. He also previously was complaining of pains in his knees, but those seem to have gone away, so maybe they were just growing pains. I am going to speak with the dr about this. Thanks again!

Thank you! He's. Really good eater in terms that he will eat anything. Pasta meat turkey seafood. There isn't much that he will not eat. That being said, he's not a big eater. He's small, only 34lbs.
The dr did say that crowns was ruled out, and no is because he is neither constipated nor has diarrhea. I really like his gastro, but i am just frustrated that we can't come up with an answer.
