Re: Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old
I know you said you like his Gastro but I would still try a second opinion. I find sometimes the docs that have the best bedside don't always catch something. You could still get another opinion but keep the original one if you need to.follow up for treatment.

has he had an ultrasound or CT? Maybe its anatomical?
This is what I was going to suggest.
I followed a Mommy Blogger for a bit whose daughter has some kind of issue. I forget what it's called, but it took awhile to diagnose and it turned out to be a problem with the actual organs themselves. (Yikes, I hope I am not scaring you even more).
Unfortunately, she decided to take her blog down for awhile so I can't even contact her for you.
I would absolutely go for a second opinion. I would also go to someone who is affiliated with Cohen's Children's Hospital if you are not already (if you live on LI that is).
Or maybe NYU or one of the other good hospitals in the city.

Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old

Does he drink a lot of juice? When I was little if I had alot of juice whether fresh or juice boxes I would have incredibly bad stomach issues. It took years for everyone to figure out it was the juice and not milk.
Hmmm he doesn't drink a lot of juice but he did start drinking juice prob around the time of the problems starting..would you mind sharing what your issues were no what in the juice caused them???
The drs were never able to figure out what was in the juice that I had problems with but I would have really bad stomach pains, gas, and sometimes uncontrollable bowel movements. I remember the stomach pains. To this day if I drink too much juice I'm in the bathroom all day. I have a slight intolerance to dairy but too much fruit juice is my enemy.
thank you so much for sharing...these seem to be the symptoms my son has. He also previously was complaining of pains in his knees, but those seem to have gone away, so maybe they were just growing pains. I am going to speak with the dr about this. Thanks again!
eliminating the juice seems like such a possible easy solution to try. I would start today instead of waiting for another doctor's appointment where they will likely tell you to eliminate as well.

I recommend either Dr. Levine at Cohen's Children's Hospital (he was my son's gastro back when it was still called Schneiders), or Dr. Daum who is affliated with Winthrop (he is extremely knowledgeable about child gastro issues). I hope you find an answer.

Re: Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old
i agree with a PP who mentioned anxiety. maybe speak with a psychologist!
when i was a child, i could work myself up enough to run fevers, vomit, loose BMs etc
at 34 lbs, I would put him back into pull ups at least for school. As long as you don't see it as a step back or he doesnt see it as punishment, it will make both of your lives MUCH easier.
at 4-5, my mom had my brother in diapers due to uncontrolled loose BMs because of anxiety.

Re: Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old
My daughter was dx with severe Ulcerative Colitis at age 3, the doctor you choose definitely plays an important role in diagnosing your child. When my dd started showing symptoms (bloody, loose output and severe pain) her ped. told me it's nothing..a week later things got worse and I went to a GI who was with Winthrop..again I was told it couldn't be UC since UC doesn't effect children that young..which is wrong..it does and it did. Then I went to Dr. Markowitz, who I highly recommend you see. He is with Cohens..and he is the best. We've done our research and Dr. Markowitz is one of the best doctors. It def. sounds like your child has a problem..I know from experience how scary all of these tests can be. I highly recommend sticking with the no dairy diet. It has helped my dd..but remember dairy is found in everything..so please read your labels carefully. Most of the time if you buy organic products they will be dairy free. My dd has had many stomach problems since being dx..they recently changed her dx to severe crohn's disease, because after multiple sugeries the disease just keeps coming back. If you have any questions regarding the diet..or just questions in general please fm me. I have been through a lot and would love to help if I can.

he does not appear to be an anxious child. As far as pull ups, I could never put him back in them...luckily he has never had an accident in school. It's because it happens when he passes gas, and he said that he makes sure to never do that in school.
Thanks for your advice!

interesting, that part about it happeneing when he passes gas makes me think it may be anatomical! perhaps lack of muscle (sphincter control?!)

wow, I am so sorry that your daughter, and you have been through all of this I made an appt with a dr at Cohens, Dr. Mahotra? I looked it up on the wesbite, and there is no dr by that name listed. I am going on the phone right now to make sure they did not give me the wrong specialist.

Have you tried an elimination diet? Take the majority of his food out for 2 weeks back to very basics and see if you notice any change. DD#1 ended up with hive but she had tummy issues etc that came and went. She got better once we did that. We did have to allergy test her butby taking most things out you could see that way. Maybe it is a preservative or dye allergy.
We went down to start:
Chicken (made drumsticks) carrots plain baked potatoes ( would slice and bake with olive oil on a cookie sheet in the oven) turkey apples bananas apple juice soy milk think we gave her cheerios
Once she did okay we slowly worked in one thing for 3 days at a time.
Eggs pasta grapes pears etc.
You have nothing to loose by trying it other than maybe not being crazy about the diet. I noticed more normal stool and less stomach aches within about 3-5 days. Also avoid processed foods when you can.
I would try another ped gastro for a second opinion. No one should have to go through that. He might not have an allergy but maybe intolerences instead.
What does he normally eat? Can kids that young get IBS or crohns?
Thank you! He's. Really good eater in terms that he will eat anything. Pasta meat turkey seafood. There isn't much that he will not eat. That being said, he's not a big eater. He's small, only 34lbs.
The dr did say that crowns was ruled out, and no is because he is neither constipated nor has diarrhea. I really like his gastro, but i am just frustrated that we can't come up with an answer.
I was going to suggest this diet as well. I want to try it with DS but it's intimidating. But if you are getting no answers it's a good place to start. Good luck

Re: Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old
oh my gosh..I wonder why he isn't listed. I hope nothing happened to him and nobody informed me. We haven't seen him in 4 months though so anything is possible. I don't know the doctor you mentioned, Dr. James Markowitz is a pediatric GI. is that the type of doctor you are looking for?

Re: Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old
I would suggest a diet too and I would eliminate any form of Gluten.
When my DS was 5 he complained almost everyday of stomach pain. This pain would literally put him to bed crying. We had him tested, took him to the Dr.'s but everything was fine. I found out he was eating bagels everyday at lunch so I specifically requested a gluten test but he was fine. He stopped eating the bagels and has had issues off/on but thankfully not everyday.
Fast forward 2 years later this is still an issue when he eats pasta, pizza or preztels (big soft ones). During Christmas break he got really bad. He didnt even want to open presents due to stomach pain. As a result, our whole family went on a gluten free diet because we are at a loss with the Dr.'s. So far he has felt great! I am a bit scared to re-introduce wheat foods buts it is the only way to find out how bad his allergy can be.
ETA: His symptoms are Pain, Very bad Gas, Nausea (but he never vomits as I thinks its from feeling bloated)
If you don't go totally Gluten Free (which is VERY hard) pay attention to what he eats and when he gets gassy, keep a log if you have too. After 2 years I know exactly what food my DS cannot eat just based on his gas

If it is Malhorta she is listed under genereal pediatrics. General Pediatrics ( I don't know her, I just like a good Google challenge.)
Hope your son feels better!

Re: Ready to lose it: Stomach issues in 4 yr old
2 things to try.
I have issues with apple juice. I had horrible stomach issues and no one could figure it out. It wound up being apple juice. It's not a true allergy but, I don't eat anything apple related.
Try Florastor. They have a kids dose. It's a probiotic but, the only probiotic that is clinically shown to work. It is amazing stuff. I had some serious GI issues and the doctor turned me on to this. Everytime I feel "off" I take a 10 day course of this and I am all better.

I would not recommend Dr Daum. He insisted my DD did not have a dairy allergy nor that she had lactose issues. In fact he told my ped there was no reason for her to be tested. Turned out she had a milk allergy the whole time. Aside from the fact that his bedside manner is horrible, and several on here have had issues with him.
Have heard Dr Levine was good.
