Real estate license?

I know we have a few girls on here who are realtors and it's something I was always interested in. I work full time and was wondering if it's feasible to do the classes over the summer (I'm a teacher) and get it done? Also, does it matter which place you take the courses through? I saw this place online that makes it sound like it's ~$800 in classes, which I found hard to believe.

Can you give me an idea of a) how long it takes to complete, b) how much $ it really costs to do, and c) if you think it could be something used on a part time basis

Thanks so much! :)

Re: Real estate license?

I took the class online with kaplan

It was about $500

Totally worth it

Do not take the class at the school in levittown- I just took new agent orientation and the people who took the class there had nothing but horror stories and they were very confused about simple things

As far as being able to do real estate part-time...define part-time? My dad was a teacher and owned a real estate company- he worked from 2-8 every night and sat and sun

Real estate is a weekend business...so you have to be prepared to work on the weekend- I work 6 or 7 days a week (I have another business I am not giving up but will soon)

In my experince it's a 24/7 job...I am always "on call"- I sent listings to someone this morning at 10am before I left to do an open house

Other expenses to consider...joining libor - mls that is also $500

So you need to lay out $1k before you make a $1

I love it...but it's not for everyone...you have to hustle to make money and be available- you will get out of it what you put in

Fm me if you have more questions!

Thanks, Beth! I'll be in touch! :)

What about the requirement that you can't apply for the NYS broker's license until you have 3 years experience in real estate?

Also, can I represent myself in our own home sale/purchase?

Re: Real estate license?

You need to be an agent for 2 or 3 years before you can be a broker

I don't even think that is enough time now that I am doing it...there is so much to know

Yes you can represent yourself

You can sell your own house but I believe you have to disclose you are the owner/agent

Let me know what other questions you have! I am working for a great broker now- he is so knowledgable

We do mainly foreclosures and he gives you listings weekly to do open houses on- you meet so many people!

It's a great time to get into the business...I am in contract on 2 houses and I have offers in on 2 more...not bad for 9 weeks and christmas and new years where dead weeks! I am really getting the swing of it now!
