Re: Reasons for C-section

My son had an arrythmia so mine was scheduled. We found out at about 30-weeks he had this condition. They said they wouldn't know if DS's heart rate was dropping becuase of a problem during labor or if it was just my baby being himself due to the arrythmia.

I'll be honest and I really hope I don't get flamed for this, but I had a C/S because I wanted one, it was elective, I was afraid to give VB , afraid of pushing, the pain and everything else, so I asked my OBGYN at 5 months and she didn't even try to talk me out of it. Yes the baby was measuring big and I'm tiny, but that wasn't really a reason, since the dr told me I could try VB and see.
Now I wish my OBGYN had fought me on this and "forced" me to do a VB, I have regretted having a C/S every days since , first of all I still ended up in labor pains for hours and hours (contractions every 7 min) before they had a room available since I went in labor the day before my scheduled C/S, then I was in so much pain for weeks and weeks, had all kinds of problems with my incision, and took me almost 2 years to finally feel like my old self again. It must be nature's way of punishing me for not even trying VB. Chat Icon
I just hope I don't have the same issues with this one Chat Icon

Thank you for being brave enough to write this...more women should be this honest about their birth experience and feelings surrounding it.

Glad to hear you are feeling back to your old self and prayers for the delivery you dream of this time around.

Re: Reasons for C-section

I was induced because my OB felt the baby was getting too big and I would have trouble delivering.

I wound up with a C because 12 hours after breaking my water and on pitocin I hadn't progressed past 2.5cm and the baby's HR was dropping with every contraction so they thought the cord may be wrapped around her neck (it wasn't).

It turns out that the OB left for his vacation right after my C- so I have a hard time believing his reasoning now. If I could go back, I wouldn't let him induce me again.

This time I'm hoping to go into labor on my own and have a VBAC. Chat Icon

ETA: DD wound up being 7lbs

Re: Reasons for C-section

FYI, I was in your situation... I really wanted a vaginal delivery, & heard that c-sec rates increase if you are induced. My water broke & they had to induce, first with cervadil, then pitocin. In all, I was in labor for 45 hours (yes, you read that right). Didn't want the epidural when it all started, but opted for it at hour 36. Then, as soon as I started pushing, I spiked a 103.5 fever. I pushed for over 2 hours. NEVER was there any talk of a c-section, but it was prob largely because I said that I did not want it unless one of our lives or health was in danger. I wound up delivering vaginally!!!

My point... there may be a lot of things that you think might hinder a vaginal delivery, but if you have a good doctor & nurses, and you make your preference known to them before-hand, you may still be able to deliver vaginally.

My baby was born with a fever, so she was in the NICU. BUT, we are both healthy & she is probably the happiest little girl I've ever seen.

Re: Reasons for C-section

Also, after 2 rounds of cervadil (24 hours after being induced), I wasn't even 4 cm! After only 12 hours of cervadil, the doc said I was "barely a fingertip dialated." Just make your wishes known & they'll do what they can to make those wishes happen.

Re: Reasons for C-section

My DS was measuring 9 lbs 4 oz and I was only dialated 2 cm a week after my due date so I was induced. After about 5 hours of pitocin my doctor said I probably wouldn't dialate any further. Lucky for me he made that decision for me because DS was 11 lbs 7 oz. I don't think I'd be here to tell this story if I had him vaginally Chat Icon

So in my experience it was due to not dialating.

Re: Reasons for C-section

I had an emergency/"crash" c-section. DD's heartrate plummeted and wasn't rebounding.

I want a vbac for #2.

Re: Reasons for C-section

My baby was footling breach. We did not find out till 37 weeks along. He was feet down so there was no chance for a natural delivery.

I agree. I delivered my daughter vaginally at 37 hours after my water broke because my doctor and nurses knew what I wanted. And my daughter and I were and are completely healthy. Be clear with what you want.

Re: Reasons for C-section

I had a scheduled C-section with my DD because at my last sono they were estimating she would be over 10lbs. (She ended up being born at only 8lbs 8oz). Also, because I had GD they were concerned she might get stuck in the birth canal because sometimes babies born to moms with GD has broad shoulders and get stuck. I was so afraid of that because they told me if it happened they basically with break their shoulder to get them through that I just went ahead and scheduled a C-section.

In hindsight, I could've probably delivered her just fine on my own but at the time scheduling the C seemed like the right (and safest) thing to do given the information I was presented with.

Re: Reasons for C-section

My baby will need surgery right away so we are planning a c-section. My baby has a small hernia and right now we can either do a vaginal birth or go for the c-section. We are leaning toward a c-section so that we will be more prepared and have the surgeon and surgery planned. I never wanted a c-section however knowing that is what Im in for I am able to plan a head and be more relaxed about it all.

Re: Reasons for C-section

If you feel very strongly about not having a C-section, you might want to consider using a midwife. Also, getting the epi can increase your risk of having a section because you aren't able to push like you would without the epi.

Re: Reasons for C-section

I felt very strongly against the c-sec, but I went with an ob/gyn b/c I was high risk (bicornuate uterus). I wound up taking the epidural at hour 36 (was in labor for 45 hours). I couldn't feel when to push as well, so they just turned down the epidural & I was fine.

Re: Reasons for C-section

I was induced early due to a medical issue, wasnt progressing after 30ish hours and then DSs heart rate was dropping. Dr. wanted to do c/s before it became and emergency.

Re: Reasons for C-section

I had an emergency C section. Here's my timeline from DS

12/28
11:11am - water broke
2:30pm - got to hospital and only 3cm dilated 25% effaced
7:30pm - no change
10:30pm - no change given potocin

12/29
5:30am - started pushing
8am - my blood pressure spiked a little
8:30am - while pushing DS turned in uterus and wasn't breech but "sunny side" or face up. My blood pressure was even higher.
9:02am - DS was born via c-section

Because of this they are scheduling me for a repeat c-section for my current pregnancy

Re: Reasons for C-section

I had an elective c section. I was terrified of v birth, and ds head was huge! My doc was fine with it. But the oncall doc was badgering me for v birth and I refused! My doc came and put me in the OR right away. Thank god i did not listen to the oncall doc, my ds head circ is huge he was born at 99 percent head size. I am small and would have been a mess, if he fit through at all. My second ds could have been vbac but I elected for c section again.

Good luck to you and do what you feel is right

Re: Reasons for C-section

I had a scheduled c-section because of thrombosed hemorrhoids.

I had an outpatient procedure at 24 weeks PG to remove the clot. It came back at 29 weeks PG.

Essentially I was buying time.

After talking to my OB and her partner, we all decided that it would be just as bad if not worst for me to "push" via a vaginal delivery.

The irony is that 2 days before my c-section, I got 4 of those bad suckers come out. I was in agony. So 1/ I ended up with the problem I was trying to avoid with a c-section 2/ I would have been in ever worst shape since 4 came out already before I gave birth.

I even had a colon/rectal surgeon come to "check it out" while I was in recovery room from c-section.

I ended up having a c section. My water broke, I went to the hospital and started having contractions. I got my epi and they moved me into the delivery room. I pushed AND pushed AND pushed. But apparently my Chat Icon was not budging. The dr eventually called it a c section.

Same with me. She was not dropping and I was ready to go. They said my pelvic opening just wasn't big enough
