Recent Winthrop Deliveries

If you delivered at Winthrop in the last six months, what was your experience? I have heard things have changed since my last delivery there. I was wondering if you had a good or bad experience? Any feedback would be great! TIA!

I had a great experience at Winthrop. The nurses were so nice. I never got a roommate. They try not to double you up. Not sure what you want to know but I would be happy to answer and questions you might have.

I loved Labor & Delivery, the nurses were so nice there. The nurses in Recovery were nice too, but sometimes they took a bit to come when I buzzed them. I paid for a private room. The L&D room was a lot nicer than the recovery room.

did you have the baby with you all night? i heard thats their new policy that you cant send the baby to the nursery overnight. i was wondering how it works if you have a rommate and then theres 2 crying babies all night long so i hope they really do try not to double up anymore.

I delivered there 3 months ago. After my stay there, they started encouraging moms to room in with babies. They didn't do it with me, but I heard they've gotten strict about it.

I had 2 delivery nurses. One was good, one was not. I had a private room which was super clean and had enough room for 10 people to visit at once. The staff on that floor was pretty great - I had 4 or 5 different nurses and the same amount of nursing assistants, and they were kind and helpful, especially with breastfeeding.

I did not have my baby all night but that was 5 months ago. I don't know if they have changed it since I have been there.

I had my son there in June and I wouldn't have have him in my room at night (he ended up in NICU so that wasn't an option). They allowed you to send the baby to the nursery (my roommate did).

I had great experiences there with both my children and was grateful for their great NICU both times.

I delivered there in October

yes, the new policy is to encourage the babies to be in the room all the time with the mothers - however if you ask to have the baby go to the nursery for the night, they will gladly do it.
I thought the L&D suite and nurses were fantastic - they were very kind, and very helpful and the room was like being in a hotel suite

i ended up with a private room because at the time i was there, they had to double up the rooms and the roommate i was going to have had chosen to have her baby in the room all night. I needed sleep so i chose to pay the $220 for the private room and it was well worth it.

Don't worry about the new policy - its there to encourage mothers to spend as much time with the baby as possible, but they don't force it on you. If you need alone time to shower or sleep, they will take the baby to the nursery

Re: Recent Winthrop Deliveries

My time there was great!!
I was there in September.
I had really nice nurses during delivery-although I had to have a C-section.
The other nurses on the maternity floor were sooo nice!!!

I paid for a private room-which was totally worth it after the c-section!

Re: Recent Winthrop Deliveries

I'm a l&d nurse at Winthrop so let me clarify a few things. The 'new' rooming in policy is a NYS law that was recently passed that allows your baby to room in with the mothers to support bonding and breast feeding. You can return your baby to the nursery at anytime but we prefer them to stay with the mothers. As a result of the policy we try to give all patients private rooms and only double them IF we have a lot of patients and doubling up is our only option.

Thank you Theresa for clarifying! I am set to deliver there again in March, and it's been 5+ years since I've been there as a maternity patient! I'm one of those willing to keep my baby all night, I just find it easier to get in the groove right away (I already know what to expect!). When I delivered there last in 2006, I did not have a roomie and I had no issues overall.

Re: Recent Winthrop Deliveries

I gave birth at Winthrop on 11/17. I had a great experience. The nurses in L&D were great, especially with all they have to deal with. I labored, gave birth and recovered in the same room. The room was large and had a bathroom with a shower. My dr. gave me permission to shower but I never did bc I progressed quickly. You are allowed to have 2 support people with you in L&D. After I gave birth the nurses cleaned me up and brought me some food, which was much needed! The baby never left the room. They weighed her, measured her, gave her a sponge bath in the room. It was nice to see everything. I was allowed to have visitors in L&D once I was ready. We just had our parents (4people) but they did not set a limit for the number of people.

After about 2 hours we were brought up to our room. Again, baby never left my side. I held her as we were wheeled upstairs. I had a nice room which was large and no roommate. They did not limit the visitors. Also, they did not really care when DH came and left. I think this was all mainly bc I did not have a roommate.

The first night I was sooo tired. I was up for almost 40 hours straight. I had my DD with me at first. She was somewhat fussy and I could barely stay awake. I rang my buzzer and asked for the baby to be brought to the nursery. They came promptly and took her. It gave me a good 3 hours of sleep. That was the only time I sent her but they always asked and were very willing to take her even though they are encouraging to keep the babies in the room.

Overall, I had a very good experience.
