Red light Cameras
Hi, I stopped short at a yellow light today at one of the red light camera lights. I was not able to fully stop and I ended up in the intersection, maybe half a car length. I did back up. I stopped short and the car behind me was so close and almost hit me and thank goodness went around me. I have to be so careful because I have a company car and can lose my job if I get these tickets. I feel like they are going to cause accidents and I was not even going too fast. Anyway, my question is, can I still get a ticket since I was over the line? I did not proceed thru the light. I know the cameras are tripped when the light turns red and you cross in to the intersection. Any thoughts?

Re: Red light Cameras
Thats a tough one. Honestly, if the light was still yellow you should of just keep going if you couldnt stop in enough time. I think the camera only takes pictures if you run the red. The fact that you stopped after the line then backed up may trigger the camera to snap a pic since you know technically was in the intersection when the light was red. However, I could be completely wrong. I dont know much about these camera things. I dont know if someone analyzes the footage also and then can see that you clearly didnt take the light. Again, I dont know. I do hope you dont get the ticket though.

Re: Red light Cameras
When a friend of mine got a ticket in the mail from passing a red light - the ticket actually had two pictures of the car going through the intersection when the light is red (Like 10 feet passed the light). So I don't think you'll get one since you never actually went thru the intersection, KWIM?

Going through a yellow light is not the same as running a red light.

Re: Red light Cameras
i was driving nb on glen cove road yesterday when the light turned red. a car heading sb but making a left was in the middle of the interesction waiting for the nb cars to clear.. the car didnt just approach, it was sitting there waiting to turn. anyway the light changed and the car was forced to turn bc it would be in the middle of the interesection for wb and eb traffic.
i saw the camera snap.. i was floored by this!
i think it snaps pics as soon as the light changes red - regardless if ur in the middle of the intersection or passing thru a light - there may be someone reviewing the pics though

This is terrible! If you are waiting to turn and are FORCED to sit there and wait b/c others are not stopping at a yellow, then you shouldn't be penalized for being there when it turns red. I would fight this if I was that person. It's crazy! These cameras are everywhere now!

I agree. You should be fine. They watch videos and see if people go through it. Since you stopped, you should be fine.

I doubt this person will get the ticket. There is video watched by people and they will see this person didn't blatantly blow the red light.

Although this is wrong shouldnt that person have been behind the line waiting for the cars to pass and not in the middle of the intersection? I know a lot of us do this (me included) but when we are waiting to turn and there are cars coming should we really be in the intersection waiting? Just saying..

YES. when making a left, you are supposed to be in the intersection waiting... I know this because I failed my drivers test many moons ago for NOT pulling up into it and waiting behind the line.

Re: Red light Cameras
I drive a ton and am constantly stuck in the middle of intersections because the light turns red and I'm forced to turn only when opposing traffic stops.
I've never gotten a ticket, and these intersections have had red light cameras (especially new ones that were installed by my area on Sunrise Highway by Lynbrook, RVC, Baldwin, Freeport).
There is definitely a person who reviews all the camera pictures and issues tickets only to those who blatantly blew the red or show the cars crossing the lines when the light was already red..So honestly, I wouldn't stress over it.

This happened to Dh about a year/two years ago..he was in the intersection and forced to turn. The camera snapped but we never got a ticket so I don't think they will issue a ticket in that instance.

there are no red light cameras in lynbrook. there are regular cameras installed by the town that monitor activity, but no red light cameras.

You are supposed to be in the intersection but ONLY 1 car at a time so you should not get a ticket if your turn left when light turns red. If a car behind you is also turning left they SHOULD get a ticket if they turn at the red light.
To OP. You are NOT supposed to stop at a yellow light if you passed the line at yellow. You will create an accident doing that.
But If you do stop after the line but before it turns red and NOT move the car at all, the camera usually does not snap.
