Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
A trend I am seeing is people slamming on their brakes to stop at red lights, or they will stop almost in the middle of the intersection after half their car is now past the line.
One would say they were speeding, and that's why they had to brake fast, but I can think of a few times where I wasn't & still felt pressure to stop quickly.
I've also seen a few near fender-benders due to this.
Any experiences you can share? Thoughts?

I've never seen that. But, I'd think that anyone who would drive like that will likely get in an accident at another time anyway. I don't think the red light cameras are at fault in the instances you're describing....the drivers clearly are!

Yep I've noticed this a lot.
I'm surprised others have not.
Is it bad or good? Who really knows - but yes, I have noticed it.

I'm glad someone else has seen it!
I notice it mostly on main roads - like over near Nicolls Rd in Stony Brook and 347 or on Middle Country Road.

On the contrary, I don't see people race to/through the light as it changes as much as I used to.

Yes, I feel like this, too. I actually see it every morning where someone could probably make the yellow, then at the last minute, slams on their brakes causing a chain reaction of people doing the same.

I thought they might cause accidents at first, but I really think they are doing a good job.

Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
I actually just heard of a study that the red light cameras have decreased the number of severe/fatal accidents, however they have increased the number of "rear ending" accidents.

I can see this. I'd much rather take a rear-ending than a head-on collision.

No I think people that never adhered to a red light before cause accidents.

Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
YES DEF!
There are a few intersections I know that have the cameras and for some reason have VERY FAST YELLOW LIGHTS and like not the norm... so when I get to these intersections I start slowing down and either have to slam on my breaks or speed up like crazy to get through them...
And I have seen MANY OTHERS do the same thing...

I feel it is really happening to new cameras being installed. It did happen a lot more in Nassau when the cameras were 1st installed but I feel people now know and there are a lot less accidents due to the cameras.

Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
Last week at the intersection of Port Washington Blvd and Northern Blvd someone going south on PW Blvd didn't make the turn in time and sat there and blocked 1 lane on Northern Blvd. There was plenty of room to put the car in reverse, but no, they just sat in there full out in the middle of traffic blocking Northern Blvd.
I was laughing and stunned at the same time.

Nope. People still fly through the intersections because people don't notice them. I see a lot more flashing going off.

Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
no..i have noticed it causing people to drive overly hesitatnt. Its like as soon as the walk sign begins to flash people are afraid to go thru the light in case it turns on them.

Re: Do you feel red light cameras have caused near accidents?
Great, the way people will go to such lengths to avoid a fine, but without the camera, they drive like they don't care who they scare, hurt, or kill.
I don't understand why NY cops don't crack down more heavily on reckless driving and get these people to pay til it hurts and/or lose their licenses. Everyone would benefit.

it's not that simple, imo. speaking only from what i know personally, a good number of times my dh pulls someone over for a traffic infraction, the person presents a pba card of some sort.
is it a coincidence that pba card carriers get pulled over a good amount? who knows. i'm not gonna speculate on that.
also speaking from a different perspective as a former local traffic court prosecutor - at the end of the day the cops have nothing to do with what kind of penalty the person gets for their traffic infraction IF the person fights the ticket. It rests in the hands of the prosecutor/judge/municipal "policies."
honestly - the red light cameras are good in the sense that they really aren't fight-able tickets. leaves out the discretion factor/pba card factor. the camera doesn't care whose wife/daughter/son/pet you are.

I have a few of PBA cards and get them every year. I haven't gotten pulled over in 4 years, and can count on one hand the amount of times I've gotten pulled over. If the card helps me, great, but I would have no problem if I got a ticket while having a PBA card (I have gotten a ticket while having the card). It shouldn't be a get out of a ticket free card. I'd be willing to give up my PBA cards if it meant that anyone that got pulled over got what they are supposed to get (warning or ticket.)
On a side note, do these red light cameras cut down on the amount of cops needed to patrol traffic? Does this allow cops to be working in areas more important than camera traffic spots? I really was opposed to the cameras at first, but think they are excellent now.

All the time. It is extremely dangerous especially since the yellow lights are like 2 seconds long.
