Reflux?
My 4 week old EBF baby has been spitting up after feeding the past few days..
Twice it was projectile and a large amount, but all the others it was a small (normal) spit up amount..
If he burps really good- he may not even spit up....
A couple times he seemed really uncomfy and gassy (like cried all morning and would nap- but that was just 1 time)...but otherwise he is his normal happy self...I mean he only has been sleeping long stretches at night since last week- w/o a problem...
Today I called the Dr, and the said it might be reflux and to watch him for a few more days and see what happens...if it continues he may need zantac...???
How is it determined to be infact reflux and not gas or normal spit up... OR even the cause of something I ate... (both times the projectile spit up happened I had eaten some really gassy foods???)
I have no problem playing with my diet to avoid giving my newborn medicine... but Im not sure how to figure out whether its the foods I eat (and which foods they are) and just reflux...
ETA- all evening long he has wanted to nurse every 1hr and gets so frustrated while eating..... whatever is going on is def getting worse...

Re: Reflux?
I wanted to add...
He often has the hiccups, and is very fidgety while eating... (unlatches, kicks his legs...)
I never have a problem burping him though- he could care less about laying down/sitting up/or being held- happy in any position

Re: Reflux?
when he latches and unlatches during BFing does it seem like a lot of milk is coming out? You may have an oversupply issue which can cause the spitting up.
Does he arch his back when he is eating or scream in pain? THose are signs of reflux.
Spitting up is normal in babies, especially if they have a gas bubble.
Being that he is EBF I would FIRST eliminate ALL dairy from your diet. Dairy is the #1 cause of reflux and discomfort in babies. Just be aware that it can take up to 2 weeks for ALL dairy to get out of your system.
If things still aren't working I'd recommend you see a GI specialist, not just a regular ped to prescribe medication. For some reason all peds put kids on Zantac and its not a great reflux med........
FM if you have any more questions. I have a reflux queen!

I dont think I have an over supply since I have pumped after a feeding and dont get a lot of milk... I do however, think my milk comes out too fast, because often times it sounds like he is choking....and in the few minutes it takes me to reposition and help him relatch my milk leaks EVERYWHERE
The times it has been the worst is after eating sauce (pizza/pasta)- should I eliminate that first??? How long would that effect him (like I had penne alla vodka for dinner Monday night, and he was cranky all morning on Tuesday- would it last that long???)
He doesnt arch his back while eating, just unlatches, whines a bit and kicks his legs (and really latches)
I know my ped- specializes in colic and reflux- since my brother had both as a baby and worked wonders for him...Right now they just have me watching DS and when I go in on Tuesday for his 1 month vsit they will direct me...

It could have been the sauce but both pizza and penne a la vodka have dairy in it.
You can't measure your supply by what you pump... You may just have an initial forceful letdown at the begining and that is why he latches and unlatches. He will eventually get use to it.
You can also bring a poopy diaper to teh ped and have them check it for traces of blood which is an indicator of a dairy allergy, not just sensitivity.

Re: Reflux?
I was told my baby has reflux. I can tell b/c she cries when she spits up, arches her back, fidgets alot while eating and spits up ALOT. And the spitup is full of mucus. It often comes out her nose and I often have to scoop it out of her mouth because it is so thick. It gets stuck in her throat and she gurgles on it. She often sound congested for hours after eating b/c it is all the way in her breating passages. She gags on it and often has trouble catching her breath because of it.
I've been complaining since day 1 about this and was always told it was normal. Finally they started her on Zantac at 3 weeks old and did an upper GI series. The test was normal (but she didn't spit up until after the test was over) so to me the results are worthless. She was no better on the Zantac so I stopped giving it. Last week they put her on Prilosec. She is still no better. We go back to the ped today so I'll let you know what they say.
I'm now thinking lactose intolerance maybe instead of reflux.
I think it sounds like your baby's issues are more related to your diet. I know when I BF Marron I had to cut out all dairy and tomato products as well as leafy greens and anything with vitamin C in it. Maybe try cutting out those tomato products and see if he is better.

So should I just stop all dairy or limit it??? (I dont have a lot of dairy to begin with) I mean is milk in some coffee ok, once in awhile????
He has been doing SO AWESOME with BFing- (since I stopped freaky out over milk supply) and I just dont want this to effect it in any way...
I just dont know how to tell what the problem is (forceful let down, over supply, normal spit up, reflux)....
I mean with reflux wouldnt he ALWAYS spit up, and always be cranky???
He has had 1 cranky day, and some gas issues here and there- but other than that is always happy and sleeps GREAT (goes from 11pm-6am getting up 1x to eat...) He does like to be held, but has no problem laying on the floor/bouncy (although he isnt a fan of the carseat AT ALL) and when he burps really good- may not spit up at all... (but getting him to burp takes FOREVER!!!)

Did they check her stool for traces of blood??? She definitely sounds like she has reflux but reflux can be brought on by a dairy intolerance. I'd try eliminating ALL dairy from your diet and see if it helps!!

Re: Reflux?
Your baby sounds a little like my baby (6 weeks) She spits up a LOT. She also used to cry and kick, stretch out her legs, uncomfortable and gassy. I was concerned about reflux.
However, part of the problem was that she just needed to learn to poop. She always sounded like she wanted to push something out, grunting and groaning (sorry tmi), but couldn't, so she was gassy and uncomfortable. She didn't arch her back, so we knew she didn't have reflux. Now, when she is able to go to the bathroom easily, she is much better and is her regular happy self. But she still spits up a lot. It is normal though. Perhaps your son has similar issues? It sounds like this hasn't been going on for too long or too often, so maybe he is just gassy? You might want to try some gripe water to help if you think its gas. Some girls use mylicon (sp?) for gas, but I think that is medicine.
As far as the food that you eat goes, I started writing down everything that I eat every day on a calendar to see if there is a pattern to DD's fussiness and discomfort. You may want to try the same? My doc wanted me to eliminate dairy and I did, and just reintroduced it. We will see if it has an effect.
Good luck.

OK sometimes the spitup is real thick and sits on his tongue- but it doesnt seem to bother him- and you dont "hear" it.... other times it goes out looking the same way it went in... (thin BM) He is fidgety while eating though....
I do eat grapefruit and drink OJ- I didnt even think of that...
Oh boy- I dont even know where to begin...

In order to see if its a dairy sensitivity you need to eliminate ALL dairy from your diet. Read labels and make sure there isn't Casein in it or Whey which are By-products of dairy. DO this for a month or so and if there is an improvement they its a dairy allergy and what you can do is S L O W L Y introduce dairy back into your diet and see if baby can tolerate it or not. You may have to be dairy free.....
Honestly, it doesn't sound like he has reflux. Alexa would SCREAM for hours a day because of the reflux. Her body would be stiff as a board and constantly arching. Feeding was a nightmare. She would arch her back, she would take very little in and would scream for hours on end.
You could see her reflux and tell the acid was coming up and burning her throat and she would let out a blood curdling scream. If we laid her down she would reflux and it would come out her nose and she would choke and cough. She was always congested and hoarse.
I know eliminating dairy STINKS.. but it's not that bad. The first 8 weeks I eliminated Dairy, wheat, yeast, onions, garlic, green leafy vegetables, and tomatoes from my diet to see if it was bothering her.... It was hard but I did it!

OK 1 more thing...
DS has had a red hieny since 3 days old... I didnt use wipes, then used sensitive wipes, changed diapers, used different creams...and no change....
Do you think that has something to do with my diet?
(just trying to give out different clues)

i don't know if it's 'training' them how to poop - but my SIL gave me a few tricks...
when on their back - maybe on changing table, or just laying around - pump their legs into their chest - NOT HARD - just bring their knees to their chest.
same thing - on the back - pump their legs like they're riding a bicycle.
PREPARE for the poop though....both times we did these exercises with Emma - we were left with POOP MOUNTAIN and i'm not joking (one time - it was within an hour - the second time it was within a few hours). She was constipated both times and the amount of doody was astounding...

My doctor recommended glycerin suppositories (sp?). I never used them, but he seemed to think it was effective.
