Registry Help - Which car seat are you getting?

Gracco Snugride or Chicco Keyfit seem to have the highest ratings.

I LOVE the way the Orbit Infant System looks but it costs a whopping $900 for a carseat plus frame. I was leaning towards the Orbit but it seems a bit impractical. I hate the way the toddler seat looks so I won't want to use the stroller after the baby is no longer an infant. The one positive is that Orbits seem to have high resale value so we would probably be able to sell it after the baby outgrows it recoup about $600-700.

We got the Snugride for the infant seat and the Britax Boulevard for his covertible seat. We will re-use the Graco for this baby, and get another Boulevard.

Do you normally register for both the infant car seat and the convertible seat before the baby is born?

I'm assuming the baby only stays in the infant seat until he is 30 pounds, which I believe is 6 months old, right?

Re: Registry Help - Which car seat are you getting?

keyfit 30 and then the britax roundabout

30lbs at 6 months is VERY big!
My nephew is 1 and 27 lbs and is VERY chunky

ETA: there are other carseats that go up more lbs. than the roundabout; however, by that time i would prefer to put him in a booster

hehe I had absolutely no idea how fast they grew. Actually if we could use the orbit for a year, i wouldn't mind shelling out the extra $$$.

So much to think about - even over a car seat!

We did register for both and put the Britax in the attic until we needed it. FYI, the Britax can be used as a rearfacing seat. It is rated from 5 lbs to 60 lbs. I kept the Graco out of sheer convenience. The Graco is rated until 25 lbs and 26" (I think...def check when you register, the information is on the tag).

Is there a reason why you wouldn't use the Britax to begin with if it can be rearfacing and used from 5 lbs?

I am so clueless.

The convertible car seat stays in the car. The infant carriers snap in and out of the car, and into a stroller frame, so you can get the baby ready in the house and then just carry him/her out to the car in the carrier. You won't have to wake a sleeping baby this way. Basically it makes things easier in the beginning.

We registered for the Graco Snugride and the Britax Roundabout.

Convenience. It is easier to get a sleeping newborn in & out of the car if you take the whole infant seat with you. The Britax is not on a base like the Graco is, and is not intended as a "take & go" kind of seat. Once DS was able to hold his head and pretty much was waking up when I moved him around, we stopped using the Graco & used the Britax.

This is what I got. If you have 2 cars, you'll need 1 infant car seat and 1 extra car seat base. You'll need 2 convertible car seats since they stay in the car.

I'm registering for the Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Car Seat with 2 bases because it works with the Quinny and then the Britax Roundabout. I'll get an additional car seat once we need it.

Re: Registry Help - Which car seat are you getting?

registered for the snugride...although it doesnt matter the pattern...we alreayd got the bumbleride double stroller for the twins for my parents and they sell carseat covers for infant seats so that the pattern will match since they don't make carseats..about getting the orbit...i would say go for it..i know its expensive buut i looked at it this wa..especially for me bc we had to get twin stroller...but i could have gotten a cheaper one but i hated the lookof them......had problems pshing it because we are both tall (me 5'11 and Rob 6'4) in the end we went with a stroller almost double the basic duoglider but its trendy...its comfortable and most of all its something you will use everyday for awhile...you can;t just get sick of it....i say go for it....

Some people register for both others don't. It depends on the infant seat you get and how much you are willing to carry to see how much use you will get out of it.

DD was 9lb 4 oz at birth - but our seat (snugride) was used for quite a while longer than others did. DD was in hers until 11 months - She was 29 inches and 20 lbs 3 ozs at 1 year. Some babies out grow the seat length wise before the weight.

Several people switched their kids to convertibles earlier only b/c the seats became too heavy for them to carry.

We are getting the Graco Snugride.

When we first saw the Orbit, we really liked it too. At the end of the day, we added up all the parts you need-- and it turned out to be a few hundred dollars more than the Bug Cameleon, so we just stuck with that-- and chose the Snugride.

Re: Registry Help - Which car seat are you getting?

Infant seats go up to either 20 or 22 lbs, depending on the brand. The decision to switch to the convertible seat is usually dependent on the primary care givers strength.... A 20lb baby, plus a 10lb seat, plus blankets, etc becomes VERY heavy. Since the infant seat is really just for convenience (above 5lbs), when it starts becoming inconvenient, you can switch to the convertible seat (rear facing, of course... for as long as possible. 18 months or longer is best)
