Remodeling Staircase in High Ranch
I'm not too fond of the upstairs/downstairs staircase in the entryway of our high ranch. My dream house is a colonial so I was thinking of remodeling the staircase to just one big wide staircase leading upstairs and then somehow building another staircase (semi-spiral shaped) off to the side that would lead downstairs. I don't think I'm making much sense, lol. But anyways, my question is has anyone ever remodeled their staircase in a high ranch?? What did it look like?

Re: Remodeling Staircase in High Ranch
My friend had a high ranch that had a smaller staircase in the kitchen that led downstairs. Maybe you could do something like that?

There is no space in the kitchen to build a staircase. Thanks for the idea though!!

Honestly, I dont think it would work. With HR you are kind of stuck unless you move the entrance to the main floor but that would depend on the front of your house?

I have a Hi-Ranch and I know we can't do anything like that. We don't have the room for it. I would contact a company that does stairs and see if they have any ideas for you. GL!

I kinda don't understand what you're trying to do...can you take a pic of what you currently have? High Ranches have stairs that go up and down when you walk in right? like 5 that go down, 5 that go up?

Moving the entrance isn't an option either - we put in a new exterior cobblestone staircase a few years ago that cost a pretty penny!! Then we would also need to recreate stairs going up, lol.

Yes, that's exactly what we have. We want to get rid of the existing staircase that goes down and just make one big wide staircase that goes up to the main floor. The down staircase would still be in the entry but to the right as soon as you walk in (instead of right in front of you). It's kind of hard to picture, lol.
Then I thought about building a small extension in the dining room to house a down staircase....maybe that would work....

Re: Remodeling Staircase in High Ranch
I love the layouts of high ranches. The thing that slightly bothers me is walking upstairs when you first walk in, but you wouldn't be solving that problem IMO I would just keep your stairs as is and put the $$$ into another project.
For what it's worth, I have a colonial and I HATE it. I hate that the bedrooms are all upstairs and I spend my life going up and down them!

Re: Remodeling Staircase in High Ranch
So you would be taking away from your living room(?) to move the down stairs?

I feel ya on that. I have a splanch and the only thing that keeps me going on the stairs is knowing I'll always have a hard tushie from them
But back to the original post, I get where you're going with it, its just very hard for me to visualize it any other way. I understand having the wide landing but I don't really get why if you're going to have the stairs in the other part of the house. It almost seems like a waste.

Can we switch homes? lol I love the privacy colonials have with the bedrooms and living area on different floors. I grew up in a 2-family house so everything was on one floor so I hated when I wanted to sleep in and my family would be up, lol.

Re: Remodeling Staircase in High Ranch
This definitely can be done.
I have priced it out, however my high ranch is a little different - my kitchen, LR and DR are on the first floor. 2nd floor has a great room and the beds.
I would have had to excavate my front yard and get a new staircase. in my case we would have just lost some space in the open room upstairs to allow for the staircase. it was about $15k. if we stay in this house for a long time, I will do it.
eta: i misread your first post. In my scenario you would walk in on the ground floor and then the staircase to go upstairs would be to the left. i wouldnt like the idea of having spiral staircases to go downstairs.
you could bump out the front of your house, have your entryway downstairs, and then a staircase to walk upstairs.
