Results of last CPSE meeting....
I signed in and then signed out of the Admin. building 7 minutes later and that includes the walk to the room and the 2 minutes or so I sat waiting, so it was a 4 minute meeting. I saw the log showing the meetings were scheduled 10 minutes apart!
They reccomended no summer services ( I knew this was coming, and am OK with it, if he regresses, they will see it in Sept. and I will have to pursue it then) a regular Class, and 2 o/t and 2 speech sessions a week in a group setting for Kindergarten.
His Teacher said she wanted it on record that the SLP felt he would regress if he lost any one on one speech and the chairperson said, Sorry absolutly not with these test scores.
I said, well I see argueing wont change your mind, so what happens when no one can understand a word my son is saying because his articulation is so poor and he doesnt do well in groups and the SLP on committee said we can request a small group ( as small as possible) and they can always add services, so what was I to say.
Now...This was just CPSE's reccomendation, we have to have the COMSI ( readiness testing next week ) and then CSE will contact me for a meeting.
Will CSE agree with CPSE's recc's?
Do I bother to fight for a individual Speech or O/T at the CSE meeting or wait ?
I think overall, its better then losing services.
Noah is getting Feeding therapy right now through insurance, I am going to look into a private speech therapist ( he gets 20 visits a yr) through insurance for summer/school yr and looking into a sensory Gym starting in Sept paying out of pocket.
Thanks for all the advice along the way everyone!!!!
Couldve been worse!

======================== CSE usually takes on CPSE's recommendation, but that's what it is -- a recommendation. If you are not in agreement, it will be better to address it now than months later. The test scores are one thing, and your child's therapists' informed clinical opinion on how your child is currently functioning is another. The committee's decision should not be based on test scores alone, but also on other qualitative info that your child's current therapists have written in the progress updates/annual report/evaluation. It is so important to document not only a list of what child can or cannot do based on the test, but also for clinicians to write a narrative on how the child is doing functionally, how current level influences performance and ability to keep up with academic demands, socialization in school and home, etc.
They say now that they can always add services, but that's not always the case. Will they be willing to put that in writing in the IEP -- "monitor progress and if child regresses, will add XYZ services." In some SDs, changes are hard to come by and yeah, services *may* be added in the *next* annual review. That's a lot of time lost, IMO.

Donna....it is MUCH harder to add services later on. Personally, I would fight for it. I would've fought for summer too if you think he's going to regress. But that's me and I'm the crazy lady lol

Re: Results of last CPSE meeting....
Bryan regresses, therefore, I go in ready to fight for summer. So far, our district has been amazing. We'll see what happens for this summer. We are trying to get him into a regular pre-k class that his school is offering over the summer, with SEIT services. (He gets this now at a pre-k outside of his developmental pre-k) Fingers crossed he gets it.
Definitley fight for what you want. Like the above poster said, as time goes on, it may get harder to get services.

Definately fight for the services now. It will be very hard to justify at a later date. I'd rather get too much to start and then ask them to take away some services during the year if need be.

Re: Results of last CPSE meeting....
I kinda feel depressed now. lol
Truthfully everyone told me he is doing soo well he would get nothing.
I knew they wouldnt do summer b/c his teacher makesit sound like like is peachy keen with Noah in her class and theres no way . He is talking and social enough now to not need it. I knew he wouldnt , and I know the chair and knew she wouldnt. So that I was willing to say ok, because I had NO back up, NOTHING to say why I needed it other then his previous regression, but last yr wasnt as bad ( summer regressing, and he made huge strides this yr. )
I will fight for the one on one O/t and speech. I needed to hear that. Thanks. It gives me time to get info and letters and such together. Thanks all!!

Re: Results of last CPSE meeting....
I am a special educator and PLEASE avocate for your child to receive 1:1 speech and OT. I see it all the time that the parents just say ok at the meeting and don't realize that it is ok to say no! Because it is true once the service is taken away it is harder to give it back. And about the summer, try to see if there is something that you can put him in even for 1/2 day bc summer school or social activities won't hurt it will only help.

Please dont be depressed! You are doing a great job as a mom and advocate for your son! As An OT i have to disagree with everyones recommendation for Individual OT services. At the Kindergarten level almost all students preform BETTER with at least one other child in a group. Its not like preschool where it is very difficult to treat more than one student. The only type of student that needs 1:1 OT is the student that require tons of physical assistance or one that frequently elopes from activities or is a safety. risk. The CSE recommended 2x/week and that is great! Most studentS get 1x/week. It sounds like the people working with your son think he is doing well. Working with preschool students is VERY different from school aged students. Its almost all table top activities, addressing Fine motor, Visual Motor and Visual Perceptual skills, which means tons of handwriting, crafts and manipulative activities. And if a student has "Group" on their IEP, but they function better in therapy by themself, i can then make it a "group" of 1, haha! Sometimes the way the schedule works out, there isnt another student to group together Also although we dont address SI in school, you and the teacher can use the OT as a resource for sensory info and strategies.

THANK you!!
I am just seriously so scared of Kindergarten.
My son is just so not ready , and I know the school tried to push him this year and while in some regards I appreciated that, he needed that, they also really failed to get to know him at all and I'm just so worried I'm not doing the right thing, I dont even know what the RIGHT thing is.
