Who’s to say that those protesting are not ppl that are truly struggling to survive with no money coming in?? Families that are having a really hard time with putting food on the table for their kids, for their parents, etc?? A lot of ppl live paycheck to paycheck here in NY. Who’s gonna stick out for them but themselves, I’m sure they’d much prefer staying home worrying about what new recipe to try instead of advocating for themselves so they can finally go back to work, and earn money to take care of their family. Please stop with the judgement and worry about urself (general u). The numbers are not increasing anymore even though I still see ppl going out without wearing a mask/gloves, I mean if it was that important then why these ******* politicians are not wearing masks and practicing social distancing?? Did u see the latest pic Cuomo posted about his family dinner with one of his daughters’ boyfriend? Ugh the hypocrisy is insane and don’t even get me started with ppl calling the police on each other! Truly insane!
The whole point is exactly what you wrote, most of us are not worrying just about ourselves, we are worrying for the collective us. The protestors are worrying about themselves and not thinking about the other people who can get hurt or die. It is selfish. Yes I get people need to get back to work. Yes it sucks and people will be financial trouble for a while, but I'd rather be in financial trouble than be dead. Families got a pretty good stimulus check and extra in unemployement which is giving many people more than what they made regularly. Mortgages a can be delayed, Rent can be delayed, alot of credit card companies are working with people on payments. It's time for communities to pull together and help those out who are really struggling not say FU and got out and potential infect more people.
Yep and these "kids" in their 20's who have no rent or mortgages are making more than some of us weekly in their paychecks.

Re: Rise Up Open NY
Let me start by saying I’m not condoning it We have to stay home as long as we can in order to save lives. But...
It’s easy for me to say when i have some $ in the bank and high limit CC I can live off of for months.
I was telling DH, If this had happened when I was single in my first apartment , living paycheck to paycheck And living on pasta and rice with a fried egg on it for most meals, I would be done for. I have not received UI or PUA. I can’t get through on the phone and there’s nothing to help me on the website. If this was then, I would be literally starving and looking for free food whenever I could get it. I’m not saying that the people looking to protest are in that position, but for those who are, I get it. If the govt can’t get it together and send me some $ for help, then you have to let me work to feed myself.

I'm not protesting either, but when people's livelihoods are crushed there are other risks involved. Increasing unemployment and economic uncertainty causes depression and suicide. I can understand the need to protest and it is their right.
What bothers me is the self-righteousness of others who wish ill on others. I'd say live a day in their shoes and then judge. Maybe you have the ability to telework, get unemployment insurance, etc. Not everyone is as fortunate.

But calling them selfish cause they’re sticking up for their own families?!? How do u know they’re not taking enough precaution when protesting?? U can’t just assuming they’re reckless and infecting every single person. It doesn’t only “suck” for some ppl to not being allowed to work. They won’t only miss a mortgage or car payment, this is def not the case for those living check by check, even more if their salary is not enough to begin with. For u to say I’d rather be financially in trouble than die, it’s bold. Not only because having covid does not mean u’ll for sure die (def not the relatively healthy person, I’ve even heard many who are considered at risk and recovered successfully) but also because the typical person that has financial problems is not the same as someone who works 2, 3 jobs just to survive monthly. And regarding the stimulus check, I wouldn’t really call it “pretty good”, we got it, it was a joke, it didn’t even covered half of our house mortgage!

I do not have a problem with people speaking up to protect their families. I just think there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. Most of the protests I have seen they are not social distancing, they are not wearing masks, they are running around telling people they want hair cuts and to go down to the corner to get a burger. There are very few people who are not affected by the shut down. Everyone has their own story but again you need to think of why we are doing it. I am all for opening businesses the correct way. I would have no problem with retail opening or hair salons or nail saions as long as people were using the correct precautions which we have seen people will not.

They also ran out of money, so a lot of big businesses got the loans but small business owners were on the News today saying they can’t get any help. People have every right to start getting upset. The last few briefings don’t offer any new information, they talk in circles, maybe say one smart thing and then start spouting out the number of deaths and new cases.
I keep hearing about these phases but no talk of what they are and what it looks like. I’m not about to protest but I also don’t think protesters are totally insane.

Rise Up Open NY
I feel the economic hardship. I do. But I am also looking for the resources available to me through the government, through my town for food, through the communities I have built around my family. Everyone is pitching in. It is a crazy time, but to add more crazy and protest, like that? That is adding insult to injury. Look at the healthcare workers tryin to stop these protestors. C'mon. Stand up for yourself and your family - sure, there are MUCH safer ways to do that.
How do you figure that out as a small business owner or an employee of a small biz? You pick up that phone, you talk to people, you find out. You don't go out there and wreak all this havoc in the name of our constitutional rights.

Rise Up Open NY
Everything that you guys are saying is the prime example of why this capitalist society is not working.
Shake Shack got $10m in PPP and announced it the same day they got $150mm in private equity. Fogo de Chao, Ruth's Chris, and others all took advantage. United Airlines got $58B in bailout and is still laying off workers. Everyone's anger is righteous but its projected at the wrong people. Why is the American public supposed to keep bailing everyone out but there's no safety net for us? And when we want a safety net we're told we're lazy pieces of garbage? So are these people genuinely protesting for their rights to build a stable, supportive, healthy society or are they protesting for massages and haircuts and golf courses?

One of the protests planned for May 1 is by LIFT - Long Island for Trump. Do you think it will be different than this? Are they practicing social distancing? Are they truly scared for their financial livelihoods?

They also ran out of money, so a lot of big businesses got the loans but small business owners were on the News today saying they can’t get any help.
Ruth's Chris Steakhouse for Example
This is shameful!! They need to take a page from Shake Shacks book and return the money. I've never eaten here and never will. I hope people remember this and boycott them when they reopen.
Sorry to break it to you but Shake Shack is just as wrong as Ruth Chris. They only returned the money because they were outed.
Ruth's Chris just did the same thing.
That's crazy, these companies act like they are returning the money because it's the right thing to do. It's because they lied on the SBA certification form and they are facing investigation if they don't return it by May 7th. They know these loans weren't meant for them. The sad part is, the money goes back, but that doesn't immediately make it available for other small businesses. They have to wait for Congress to approve new funding for the program, who knows if and when that will happen.
