Avoiding all side debated here but I have a question

From a photographic standpoint, isn't that a very plain and harsh looking scene for picture? I read that Simon said they weren't fully done with the display - but from my understanding, they were charging people for pics already?

The concept of a light show and all sounds really neat - but when it's not lit up or what have you, I would imagine any pics would be very blah, no?

They might have superimposed a digital background onto the actual prints
A lot can be done with computers, photoshop etc.
I am sure it wasn't just a plain white background that you got when you got the actual picture

That's true. I think it just stuck out to me when they said they weren't even fully done yet but it seemed people were paying for pics. I would love to see what the pics looked like out of curiosity.

The whole thing was a bad idea. Christmas pictures are about Santa, elves, Christmas tree, presents etc. IMO they did it to make Christmas less identifiable w Christians, probably to make more money thinking maybe other faiths would take pics w Santa? I don't know but it was dumb

why would someone from another faith want a picture with Santa? why would they want one in a normal christmas setting with a tree, or on a glacier with an aurora borealis?

I don't think they would but maybe from a marketing standpoint they thought it would make it less "Christmasey" who knows lol

Exactly. The main thing sooooo many people seem to be missing is that other faiths don't want to do anything with Santa because Santa is a representation of CHRISTMAS. I don't know a single Jew who brings their kids to take pictures with Santa, with or without a Christmas tree in the background. And those who would do it, would do it regardless of the display.

I agree that it's ugly and I'll take my kids to a traditional Santa display, but Santa is supposed to live at the north pole.. I don't understand how people aren't drawing the LOGICAL conclusion that they tried to put Santa in a realistic setting with that glacier thing. The North Pole looks nothing like New England in winter, which is what a "traditional" Santa display looks like.

Chat Icon Thank you!!!
If this was a case of "Political Correctness" (BTW - Oh, the horror of being inclusive!!!!Chat Icon ) they would have
A) gotten rid of Santa altogether- or would have made him wear a black suit or something
B) Simon would have made this change in all their malls - not just seven of the probably hundreds. And it's not like they just did this in "blue" NY- as we all know one was in NC which is not known for their liberalism.

Just because "some guy" that someone's friend said she talked to told her that "some other guy" who works for the mall (as what, janitor, store operator, delivery guy, ceo???) said that it was "to not offend" people, doesn't actually make that true.
It seems to me (but I'm probably crazy) that they were trying something new and trying to modernize it in a test run in these SEVEN stores. Personally - I did not like it - I thought it looked like something from the Jetsons and I didn't think it looked festive. But, my guess is my 6 year old son would think the it was cool, especially if there were buttons to press to make stuff happen.

We saw Santa at Smith Haven on Saturday and there was a lovely display with a huge tree and snowmen and even (I don't remember this being there in previous years) a nativity scene. Smith Haven is also owned by Simon.

I bet with that "glacier" they could VERY easily have Santa step aside and even someone who doesn't celebrate Xmas could have their kids take a pic in a "winter scene" if they so wanted. I doubt anyone would actually be clamoring for that but I would imagine that was their thinking.

But whatever, it's still ugly.

And they can also go to Picture People for the exact same thing, 365 days a year. It's a stretch.

But I definitely agree it's ugly. Chat Icon

I'm sure they were "testing" it out in a few of their malls to see how it would be received before doing it across all of their malls. Obviously it went over like a ton of bricks. Chat Icon

I LOVE Smith Haven mall's display, it's always so pretty! They do an awesome job every year.
