Rude or not - when a house is for sale...people "using" your possessions?

would you be annoyed if a potential buyer allowed their DC to play with and touch your children's toys and clearly sat all over your furniture, or is this par for the course? would you expect your realtor to NIX that kind of behavior or do you just deal with that kind of stuff hoping it helps make a sale?

It would bug me a little but I would likely just deal with it - you don't want to turn anyone off...

I would think that people would be respectful but some people are just rude. I think it puts the agent in a tough spot since they want to make the sale.

OMG, when we were on the market we came home after a showing one day and DS toys were ALL over. Not just a few out of place, but a ton ALL OVER the place.

I called my realtor who was p!ssed, and she immediately called the other realtor who more or less was like "I dont see what the big deal is".

My realtor was like you dont touch other peoples stuff and trash the house while you bring clients, and if I kid touches toys, PUT THEM BACK. She LACED into the other realtor. Who again, was literally like "too bad, tell your clients to get over it"

I was ******. Not so much that another little kid touched Eddies toys, but that they left it that way.

A couple of times I let DS play with the toys to keep him quiet , I personally don't think it's a big deal everything was put back. everytime we walk in to a toy room, I'm like ohhhhhhhhh here we goooooo bc he will have a fit if I don't put him down.

I wouldn't mind if it were the other way around and the kids were playing w/ My DS toys, but I'm a softee and don't like to say no to any kid

I wouldn't want my realtor to say anything, just sell the place!

Sooo rude IMO

Im sorry but if you are bringing your child, bring him his own toy to play with. I dont want your kids germs on my kids stuff. ( you putting them back is even worse bc i dont know to wash them)

IMO it is important to teach children that they need to respect other peoples things and that they cant play with whatever they want.

Absolutely rude!

A showing is not a free for all to touch my stuff.

The furniture is not for sale, you don't need to lay down on my bed, sit on my couch, touch my kid's toys. Bring your own entertainment. This is not a PED's office.

You are buying a house. You can look at the house and open closets. The rest... is mine! Don't touch it!

the toys to me def cross over a line, especially leaving a mess like that! i remember when we were still renting and living in a house that was for sale, people would come to the showings with their kids and let them run wild. a kid burst into our bedroom unannounced one time and i got a little nasty with the parents looking at the place.

on the other hand, i remember being there for an inspection on a house we almost bought (but didn't because it was apparently on the verge of collapsing) and we were there for almost 2 hours. i sat on the furniture.

Rude. I don't remember being in one room of any house I looked at long enough for DS to get comfortable enough to start playing anyway.

when IL's house was for sale, I came back after an open house to find their hair dryer out on the counter and still plugged in. I handed it to the guy thinking he brought it and forgot to take it with him. He said "Oh, that's yours" and proceeded to open the bathroom closet and put it back away from where he got it Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I dont think iI'd be upset that the kids touch the toys if they are younger i.e toddlers. Its not that deep. However I would not like people sitting on the furniture or going through personal stuff.

Re: Rude or not - when a house is for sale...people "using" your possessions?

when we found our house, we put in the offer that day, so we sat at their dining room table to fill out the papers, i felt soooo weird doing it but we kind of needed to do it, i hope the owners wouldnt have minded that

but otherwise i agree its rude to use other peoples things and to leave a mess

I have done that- the house was vacant (besides some furniture) and we needed to write the offer

I don't see anything wrong with writing the offer at a table- since it's an offer

I just normally lean on a pad or stack of papers so I wouldn't leave a mark

Re: Rude or not - when a house is for sale...people "using" your possessions?

I could never ever let my child play with other kids toys..
if i know dd is going to be a hassle and want to play with toys in every house we visit, i would make arrangements for someone to watch dd.

it is rude. you are there to see the house, not make yourself at home.

of course if you had to sit on a chair to fill out paperwork, by all means, but i think it stops there.

its important to respect people's property and i make sure to teach my child boundaries..

DITTO!! I don't have kids so we wouldn't have anything for them to play with, HOWEVER we do have very expensive nice stuff all over, and if some parent brought their kid in and BROKE something there would be war!!Chat Icon

AND! I know from my friends that germs on toys can be an issue. Being a germ phobe myself, I would be flipping mad to have to de-germ all the toys!!

I think it's incredibly rude to use someone else's possessions without permission. Other then sitting at a kitchen table to do some paperwork, I cannot see any reason to make yourself home in a stranger's house.

I can understand someone maybe sitting on your couch while talking to the realtor but playing with your DS's toys is just nuts!
