School taxes

Ok CFer's...I read this on another CF board and wanted to see how you all felt about it.

Do you think that if you do not have children in the SD you should get a tax break?

My DH and I had this discussion a few weeks ago and this is how I feel. I think that EVERYONE should contribute to the education of our children, otherwise if it was only those that used it had to contribtute, we would be in deep trouble.

I do think that those that DO NOT use the system, should be getting a discount on our taxes. Not just CFers but also Senior citizens.

Maybe I am mistaken but I thought that is why STAR was created, for those not using the school system but now it seems that everyone that applies gets the STAR break. Anyone know the answer to that?

Re: School taxes

I don't know about the STAR, I'll have to do some research on what it's really for, I thought it was for that as well, but it seems everyone gets it.

I do agree with paying taxes towards for the schools, I don't have a problem with that...and I don't have a problem with a discount for the seniors +55 not having to pay so much for school tax.

I don't know about in NY - but in some +55's in NJ - you don't have to pay school tax on your house, my Mom's friend does not. It's a huge incentive to move there when we can retire in 12 years 6 months and I don't know how many days...I should start a ticker. Chat Icon

STAR

which is really stupid huh?

STAR stands for New York State School Tax Relief Program which should mean if you dont use it, you get a tax break!

Re: School taxes

I'm all for paying. I used the system and someone paid for me. This is for the well being of our community and I'm all for paying it forward.

As for star, I believe seniors are entitled to "enhanced star" which is a deeper discount, no?

I'm really not too familiar with the program, to be honest, but I know that exists.

Re: School taxes

I'm fine with paying school taxes because it's part of the choice you make when you choose a place to live.

I don't agree with income tax deductions for children. Especially when there is neither tax deductions for IF nor mandated insurance coverage for IF in this country.

I had not thought of this but you make an excellent point.

Although I would love not to pay it, I don't think there's any way that would work,..

Re: School taxes

It wouldn't make sense to reduce school taxes for people who don't have kids. I agree with those who've said that everyone is benefiting from the education of the next generation. Even CFers are going to need doctors and nurses and lawyers etc. when we're older and our generation has retired.
