Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
With all this talk about the high prices of school taxes around LI would you go along with a mass consolidation of districts? Would you be angry that the house you purchased was no longer in the "district" as you know it?

yes...consolidation would bother me. We bought in our district for a reason and understood our taxes would reflect that.

No and I shouldn't have to. The corruption is out of control.

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
I would give up a lot to lower my outrageous school taxes.
I can't say enough about the corruption that runs rampant in my school district.
It wouldn't concern me because the consolidation would impact the districts surrounding mine, which are as good as the one my home is zoned for.
Just thinking about this gets me irate.
I beg people all the time to pay attention to what their school board is doing right under their noses

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
Honestly it would not bother me one bit & anything to save on my school taxes. All the surrounding districts are very nice (we looked in all the areas) so we would not be loosing out!
After seeing that the school district I am in put all new astro-turf fields in, now I know why the taxes were increased so much. Now tell me, do we REALLY need that in a HS???

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
ah, but if you live in Massapequa and they want to consolidate you with Amityville you might have a different feeling.
I think they should keep the boundaries as they are and consolidate things like admin, bus services, contracts for landscaping, etc.
if i lived in an area where the surrounding districts were of the same calibur, i wouldnt mind one bit!

I'm not a believer that a school district determines a child's success. I'm also not into labeling districts as good just because the slanted scoring system & newsday said so. I am a believer that we NEED to consolidate the LI districts, maybe into 3 or 4 in Nassau & 6 or 7 in Suffolk. I think it would serve ALL of our children well. The majority of kids on LI are attending schools that are way too homogeneous for me. We might have an african American president, my kids should certainly have friends that aren't all white.

I'm not a homeowner yet, but YES!
there should be a Nassau SD and a Suffolk SD. county SD's are common in most of the US.

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
I live in White Plains and pay quite a bit for taxes, but I live in a district where kids are placed in the elementary schools based on lotto, not neighborhood. In one way I like it, my son will be exposed to all people from all economic brackets, however, it does annoy me that he will be attending school with a lot of people who pay no taxes at all and will probably have to move at a slower pace school-wise (many ESL students.) I know that if we stay put, I will have to stay on top of his education to make sure he's getting all of the help he needs as well as being properly challenged. If DH and I find he's not getting the education he needs, we will either look into private school or look into moving, with the first option being more likely.

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
absolutely not. i bought into my district for a reason.
i would, however, be strongly in favor of school districts consolidating resources, health insurance packages and bids. that would lower taxes due to stronger bargaining power.

I would be adamantly opposed to such a change. My husband and I are staying here because we want our child to have a New York/Long Island education. I do not see why we should move to a model that has not created great schools in other states.

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
I'd be really angry. I bought this house after researching school districts. I knew the taxes were a little higher than I would have preferred. I specifically wanted something small - and despite the smallness of the district overall - the classroom sizes are ALREADY too big for my tastes. so it would aggravate me if it suddenly got LARGER. The tax cut wouldn't assuage my aggravation in the least.

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
I would be livid.
I chose the area that I live in FOR the district. Actually...for the particular school my son attends IN this district.
AND...I chose the high taxes that come with it.
Everyone that even LOOKS at a house in this part of my town KNOWS they are going to pay the higher tax because of the school.
If you don't want to pay it, don't move here. It's as easy as that.

I would be really upset about that. A big part of the reason that we bought our house was the school district that it's in.

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
I could have bought a bigger, more updated house w/ much lower taxes...but I chose to purchase a home that needed a little work, but has a great school district.
If they did do something like that, it certainly would change the housing market landscape on LI.

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
Our first home was in Islandia-it was a nice neighborhood, wide streets, sidewalks, viollage run so everything was taken care of well. However, it was in Central Islip Schoold District. My taxes: $8500 a year without STAR. I don't feel I got a tax break living in a "bad" school district(I did not have children)

Personally I purchased my house based on the school district. If the structure changed I would be very upset. My neighboring districts are all vastly different.

Re: Would you be willing to give up your school district for lower taxes?
We don't have children. I could care less what the school district is like.
I wish there was a tax break for people like us. I pay property taxes, why should I pay for other people's children's education?
