Many for the family.
It will ONLY end when the punishment is as scary and irreversible as the crime--like life in prison for causing a dui injury or death and a permanent license revocation for ANY dui.
That's what it's going to take for people to follow the law.
The real question is when people are going to realize this.
I agree that we should send to the family,
but you are totally wrong that it will end if you increase the punishment.
I'm actually lobbying my local reps. to increase our proactive solutions. I've found that the organziations you would expect to help in this situation, aren't helpful at all.
Punishment is reactive - and won't work at all with impaired drivers. I'm not talking about the college kid who leaves a bar on a random friday night - I'm talking about the people with serious addictions.

Re: SCP killed by a drunk driver
Does anyone know if the name of the officer is released yet? We have a very good friend who is a Suffolk cop and works that vicinity. Part of me says what are the chances it's him and the other part is feeling sick. I can't get in touch with him or his wife so I'm praying it's just a fluke thing.
ETA: It's not our friend Thank God but how heartbreaking nonetheless. My heart goes out to the Officer and his family.

You know what then? I respect your work and findings--but let's cover this from all angles. Make the law as unforgiving as the consequences of the act to deter the college kid--AND ramp up the proactive outreach for people with serious addictions. Let's do all we can--but at the end of the day, not even an addict should be able to escape the consequences of getting behind the wheel whle intoxicated and taking (or even harming) a totally innocent life.

Seriously, addict or not, if thsi guy had been punished by being placed behind bars last month, this officer would still be alive and well.

Re: SCP killed by a drunk driver
Agreed (with seaside)-
You can find your local officials at congress.org - just enter your zipcode.
Truth be told - these guys could care less about the issue of getting impaired drivers off the road. They just care about getting elected.
One letter from me isn't much of anything, but a bunch of letters from people on here may get some attention.
Of all my local officals, I have found Steve Levys office to be the most receptive. Like him or not, his people listen - and he is in a position to help.
In my research - I've actually found MADD to be pretty ineffective. Perhaps I've just spoken to the wrong people over there.
Any advice / direction would be appreciated.
Just curious - has anyone else on here tried anything to get a solution to this problem? If so, perhaps we can work together. I have no problem doing the leg work.

Very true!
Steve Levy is not for the police. Sad, but true. The PBA is having major problems with him. I'm not going to get into it on here though.
I'm confused as to why he wasn't arrest in Nassau last month when he was pulled over for a DUI?????

I live around the corner from there and i heard all the sirens... I passed by there this morning and saw everyone crowded around where the burned car was but I had no clue what happened. The light on Vanderbuilt by the Northern was still out..

The lawyer who is defending this piece of c*ap drunk is the same lawyer that is defending William Walsh the other scumb*g who killed his wife and dumped her in the woods...gee, that's a surprise.

Re: SCP killed by a drunk driver
He had a conditional license which he was violating the terms of.
He has had a laundry list of prior incidents, arrests, tickets, etc. and was arrested (like someone else mentioned) for DWI last month in Nassau.
Again, another person who had NO business being on the road even aside from the fact that he was drunk!

Re: SCP killed by a drunk driver
Here is my take on it. Yes, if this guy was in jail, like he should have been- then this never would have happened.
But no matter how strong and scary they make the punishments- I don't feel it will deter anything.
Look at murder- there are some pretty scary and strong punishments associated with that- and yet, people still murder others every single day. People always think they are going to be the one to get away with it...regardless of the possible consequences.
It is a very sad, unfortunate part of society- and I don't think it's ever going to change....

Re: SCP killed by a drunk driver
the sad part is, even if they make the laws punishing DWI offenders MUCH stricter, that still won't keep them off the roads.
take ther license, they still drive. take their car, they find another. jail them, they get bailed out. unless the legislature makes DWI a felony with a MANDATORY jail sentence of more than a year, and changes the law so that ALL DWI/DUI offenders that kill people are charged with MURDER, with a mandatory life sentence, it will never end, much less slow down. i personally know people who still drive when they shouldn't - i think we all do. they think that it won't happen to them, that they have total control over their bodies.
like a PP said the solution is to be PROACTIVE. for example, make DWI/DUI education and prevention classes mandatory in high schools and driving courses.

ITA! Its very sad that someone can kill someone and get away scott free The punishment does not fit the crime

But based on what you just said there imposing jail sentences will physically prevent or deter recidivists. I'd rather have a law that lets everyone do something bad once (the first time) and subsequently incapacitates them by taking away their freedom than one that slaps them on the wrists and lets them continue to flout the law.

Re: SCP killed by a drunk driver
I don't even know what to say, I am completely ENRAGED that this happened.
WHEN WILL PEOPLE GET THAT YOU CANNOT DRINK AND DRIVE? NO! YOU CANNOT HANDLE IT!
The senseless waste and disregard for human life disgusts me. The fact that this guy was a repeat offender just makes it all the more worse.
This tragedy hits me on 2 levels - 1. the loss of a beloved cousin at 25 years old, 11 years ago to someone who "thought they could handle it". The anger never goes away, it's just something you learn to live with. Second, my husband is a police officer. Whenever one is killed, for whatever reason, I always think "that could be me getting that knock on the door".
My heart breaks for this officer's family and I send them all my love and prayers.

I agree with that part yes. But what I was saying is that when someone gets behind the wheel drunk, or takes a gun and shoots someone, they are rarely thinking that they will get caught. So no matter how tough the punishments are, I don't think they will be a deterant or prevent anything. If you lock people up and throw away the key, then yes, that ONE person won't ever do it again- but that doesn't mean others won't be out there doing it. So the problem will never really go away....
