Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
This one happened SO fast. She had a runny nose on Monday, and yesterday she was a miserable, cranky, crying mess! She just got over one, too (was first diagnosed on 3/25 with her first ear infection ever).
Are we doing something wrong? I know nothing about ear infections. Could this be exacerbated by getting water in the ear during a bath? Sorry to sound so ignorant but I really am!

Re: Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
Julian is also recovering from a double.
I don't know if you are doing anything wrong. Our ENT said that genetics plays a role. I know DH had the worst chronic ear infections when he was little. Now he has passed this on to Aidan (and it seems like Julian is not far behind). Are you finishing the course of antibiotics? Is her crib inclined? I don't think that getting a little bit of water in her ear would exacerbate it (I'm no doctor so take it with a grain of salt). I wouldn't think it is the same as going in a pool and constantly submerging her ears.

Re: Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
Some times they just happen. As a mother of a child who CONSTANTLY had them.. I feel your pain. I had a lot of guilt because Id have to read others say how breastfed children didn't suffer such things. Which isn't true.
Her bottle had nothing to do with. Neither did daycare (she'd get them home during the summers) she just GOT them. Some she'd suffer, other she'd get and NO ONE knew until a well visit and it was like "oh wow, raging double ear infection?"
Since her tubes tho, we've had none.

Re: Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
no bath water does not cause ear infections..there is no bacteria to cause the infection!!
Did you take her for a recheck on the first infection..you're sure its not the same infection right?
If it's not the same one.. then it's just the cold causing it!! Soooo sorry you are going thru this now too!!!

Ian's going through this too. he just finished 10 days of antibiotics and he has it. we're going to an ENT to talk about tubes.
and genetics definitely plays a role. i had the worst ears and always had infections. i have major scar tissue in my ear from all the tubes i got.

Re: Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
genetics definetly play a role and BFing does not help all babies
I bf my son and got at least one double a month from 6 months till 15 months when he had tubes put in and he has had at least one infection since tubes
i had tons and so did my brothers so my ped who was ours as a kid knew once they started that we were in trouble
also watch if there is fluid in the ear after the infection clears- that has a big impact on hearing - i wuld start pusing doc for a ear check after - i know copays get expensive but you want to make sure the fluid is gone along with the infection
water in the tub does not matter - that is outer ear -

Re: Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
just got back from the ped today with an ear infection. First one for this year. last year DS had them every month from May - Sept.
It happens alot when he was teething bad, hands in mouth all the time.
this time it started as a cold/congestion and made its way to the ear. I thought something was off last nite when he was sleeping he was breathing really fast. even this morning when he was sitting quietly, still breathing really fast. so i brought him to the dr...102 fever, infection in the left ear. and he was congested with junk..ickk.
Not much you can do to prevent it.

Re: Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
its the weather and probably complicated by teething
we were told (since jack is an ear infection pro ) to try to keep water out of his ears. also, do not let her drink bottles/sippys laying flat, try to have her sitting up when she drinks.
not too much else you can do. keep her nasal area clear with saline, will help her ears

Re: Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
Both of my kids delt with ear inf It actually intefered with there speech. Both of them needed tubes! I believe ear inf happen because of the positioning of the eustacian tubes, the fluid is not able to drain. Don't worry your not doing anything wrong! I used to think they go them because they refused to put hats on!

Re: Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
my DD has 9 ear in 5 months... (bottle fed) my DS had 0 ear infections in 3.8 years (bottle fed)
my friends 3 kids (ages 10, 7, 4) all BREAST fed, had ear infections and they all had tubes placed in.
so bottle feeding and breast feeding do NOT go hand in hand with ear infections. it just happens.

Re: Second double ear infection in 2 weeks
I am sorry LB. I think some kids are just more prone to them because of the size/shape of their ear canals. Hope she feels better soon
