Self feeding with a spoon or fork
When did your dc learn to do this? I have not even let mikayla attempt to do this yet she self feeds with her hands all the time but I have yet to introduce utensils....is there some sort of "way" to teach them this, what is the right age to start this
TIA

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
I started the kids at around 9-10 months (it may have been before that).

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
i started giving her a fork/spoon around 1 year. She didn't start actually getting the hang of eating with it until recently, about 18-20 months old.
It's a big cognitive thing for them, just think of the steps you take to get from plate to mouth

when you gave them the utensils, did you "show"them what to do / guide their hand, etc

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
I started giving DS utensils until after he was 1 but he did not start getting the hang of them until he was about 16 or 17 months.

Yes, you do. Give them the fork/spoon and show them and guide them. a warning, things will become alot more messier than usual, but she'll do great!

More like guiding and helping when she started to do it herself but kept missing.
Does DD eat with you? I swear my DD learned more by watching mommy and daddy eat with it and tries to mimic us.

DS too. He has learned so much more and has tasted so many different foods by eating with us.

Lukie is 13 months. He TRIES to eat yogurt with a spoon but 95% of it lands on the floor or himself

Started giving him utensils at around 11 months. As the months went on, he would get more food in his mouth rather than on the floor. Now, he's a pro!
ETA: this was him at 12 months using a fork,,it gets better!

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
yes, she does watch us eat. I have tried giving her the spoon while I am feeding her (she does NOT want me to feed her anymore ) but she just winds up shaking the spook and getting the food everywhere. This will be fun

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
I let her start trying at around 11 months. By about 13-14 months she was actually doing pretty well with them and will get the food in her mouth more often than not.

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
DD can put the spoon and fork in her mouth to get the food...but she has yet to figure out how to get them there herself!
If I put chicken on the fork, she will eat it...but she can't put the chicken on the fork herself

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
As soon as he started eating, I always gave him a spoon. He really got the hang of it when he turned 1.

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
I started pretty early and he sort of gets it all in his mouth but not really at 21 months. It is still a difficult task for him for some reason. Maybe because I should practice more with him.

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
At 17 months, DD will stab at her plate and end up forking something about 50% of the time. She can get it in her mouth. But a spoon....forget it

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
I feed DD half the time but the other half - DD grabs the spoon right out of my hand and feeds herself - (but she also loves to stick her hand in the food too) she gets most of it in her mouth - but I think it will be a while before she can do it well. She will be 9 months tomorrow.

Re: Self feeding with a spoon or fork
DD is really getting good now but she needs help getting the food on the fork tines.. but if I stab it for her, she'll grab the fork and put it right in her mouth- no misses. she's 17th months next week.
