Semen analysis - do they test for strength?
I am sure most of you know this info already. From a semen analysis, they analyze a lot of factors, but the main 3 are: motility - how mobile the sperm is volume - how much sperm there is morphology - how "normal" they are shaped.
But do they test for how "strong" the sperm is?
I mean, lets say the guy has good volume and good motility. So there is a lot of sperm, and they swim very fast and far...but what if they get to the egg and they are too "weak" to get inside?
Is there a test to make sure the sperm is strong enough to break through into the egg?

No, they don't test this because there's really no such thing.
Basically, many sperm have to reach the egg and they all fight to get in, which essentially enables 1 to get through. If only 1 sperm reaches the egg, there's almost no chance that it will be able to penetrate the egg.

There is no test for that only when you do ivf and they find you have a fetilization issue will it be known. My fert rate was 35% naturally and they think my eggs have a harder shell which makes it harder to fertilize. When we do ivf again we will opt for icsi.

ohhhh that makes sense.
So, 1 sperm cannot penetrate an egg, but 1 might penetrate a little, then another sperm will break the shell a little more, and so on, until the shell is broken?
very cool.
mama2b Good luck
