Maybe it was for the Pilgrims? But sadly, not around for us to ask. Perhaps they sent a letter home and Jonty found it in the attic of the person you are debating.
ETA: Nevermind, I realized they were Dutch not British. Joke doesn't really work now.

nope. in fact, the Thanksgiving that we celebrate now (thanks to FDR) was actually promoted from old pilgrim holiday to national holiday for fiscal reasons!

I had to do a double take there... my friend Jenny calls my husband Jonty. No real reason...I think he reminds her of someone called Jonty.
Do you guys think that in the rest of America, ie outside of NY where people aren't as multi religioned, people see Thanksgiving as a religious holiday? Because in my argument on another forum people are saying that Thanksgiving is a day to thank god....

The National Thanksgiving Proclamations
National Thanksgiving Proclamations proclaim thanks for God’s providence in the events of the nation and, as President Washington explained in his Thanksgiving Proclamation, "for the many signal favors of Almighty God" in the lives of the people.
As congress recognized the importance of Thanksgiving observance, President George Washington issued a national Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1789. He wrote, "Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country...for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed...and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually...To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us—and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best."
In 1789 Washington designated a national thanksgiving holiday for the newly ratified Constitution, specifically so that the people may thank God for "affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness" and for having "been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed... "
President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a Federal holiday as a "prayerful day of Thanksgiving" on the last Thursday in November. Since then every U.S. President has always made an official Thanksgiving Proclamation on behalf of the nation. President Franklin D. Roosevelt set the date for Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday of November in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941).
Technically, the Federal holiday is not religious, and it's founded on giving thanks for the harvest. However, most people thank God for the harvest bounty, making it religious.
I don't consider it a religious holiday. It's just a time to be thankful for everything and everyone we have.

People of all cultures/religions celebrate it...
One can definitely add their own sense of religion to it...we always say a prayer before we eat to thank god...BUT obviously don't have to.
It's just a day to be thankful for what we have. You could be completley atheist but still feel thankful, that is my rationale!

no - it was to celebrate the first harvest (but it might have coincided with a Pilgrim Holiday?)
but then again the first settlers left England/Europe to avoid religious persecution, so I think there were a few religions that were here.
and tthen the Europeans gave the Native Americans syphallus...
Canada also has a Thanksgiving, but its earlier in the year.

When people ask me about Thanksgiving and what it is, as many Brits do...I have been asked twice today.
I usually tell them the usual bumpf and then I tell them that we repaid the native americans by raping their women, stealing their land and forcing them to live on reservations....

Not religious.
The US celebrates it as a combination of customs during a time of bleakness in our early history.
Canda celebrates as well, but earlier as a comemeration(sp?) of the explorers who founded passageways and other settlements.

Good point. No major empire at any time in history hasn't been guilty of this unfortunately

Good point. No major empire at any time in history hasn't been guilty of this unfortunately
I'm not sure who this quote belongs to, but I heard it a long time ago and it stayed with me. Goes something like....
"Since the begining of time, land belongs to whomever can defend it"
