Please help settle an argument.....painting and molding???
Please help settle an argument between me and my husband....pictures would help alot!!!
We just redid our basement and we are about to paint it. We have a 2 inch base molding and I am thinking of painting the walls a very rich blue, green or gold color (still not decided) and we have wood floors. The ceiling is going to be painted white. Okay so here is the argument.....I want to paint the 2 inch base molding the same color as the walls so that the walls look longer and taller. My husband wants to paint the walls whatever color and paint the base molding white with all white trim---doors ect....what do you think??????

We have the base moulding painted white.
The doors are white too (rooms, closets) & so is the framing around them. If we painted the baseboards the wall colors, it would look weird where the baseboard meets the closets.
They are also the thick kind, which I think look good wood or white. My parents have the more curved kind, that aeren't as pronounced & they have them painted the wall color.

Re: Please help settle an argument.....painting and molding???
What about a beige if you do not want white? I think painting them to match the walls is only good for top moulding, as it makes the ceiling look slightly elevated, which might be a good option for a basement space. (You could also paint the moulding to match the ceiling for the same effect).
Would you do the floor mouldings in the same colour as the floor & keep them wood?

I dont like the mouldings done in the same color as the wall. I think it should some shade of white or left a natural wood tone.

I prefer white alos. you dont have to do a bright white though - do a creamy white. My painter used BM White Dove i think...

Re: Please help settle an argument.....painting and molding???
We painted the base moulding in our MBR the same color as the walls - against my will - b/c the moulding was so busted. We are replacing the moulding with one that we plan to use throughout the house and it will be painted the same color as the rest of the trim in the room (it's in the white family, but not white-white).
I definitely agree with everyone else. Imo, it does not elongate the walls at all.

Re: Please help settle an argument.....painting and molding???
I prefer semi-gloss white/off-white trim & molding with the ceiling being a flat.
Sometimes I like the look of molding that's painted a color, but it's always a different shade from the walls, never the same color.
The only way I think the same color might work is if you use a high-gloss on the trim & molding, but I consider that a very contemporary/modern style. You definitely want some kind of contrast.
