Re: Settle this argument for me re Thanksgiving

When people ask me about Thanksgiving and what it is, as many Brits do...I have been asked twice today.
I usually tell them the usual bumpf and then I tell them that we repaid the native americans by raping their women, stealing their land and forcing them to live on reservations.... as opposed to the Birtish Empire doing this all over the world for 100's of years
In addition to the British Empire doing this! But the Brits don't really have a day designated to celebrate it!

Good point. No major empire at any time in history hasn't been guilty of this unfortunately I'm not sure who this quote belongs to, but I heard it a long time ago and it stayed with me. Goes something like....
"Since the begining of time, land belongs to whomever can defend it"
I like this one:

Re: Settle this argument for me re Thanksgiving
It's not religious...it's an American Celebration to give thanks for the harvest season...derived from an American Indian celebration of the same.
From Wikipedia: The early settlers of Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts were particularly grateful to Squanto, the Native American and former British slave who taught them how to both catch eel and grow corn and also served as their native interpreter. Without Squanto's assistance, the settlers might not have survived in the New World.
The Plymouth settlers (who came to be called "Pilgrims") set apart a holiday immediately after their first harvest in 1621. They held an autumn celebration of food, feasting, and praising God. The Governor of Plymouth invited Grand Sachem Massasoit and the Wampanoag people to join them in the feast. Evidence to support that claim came from diaries of Plymouth. The settlers fed and entertained the Native Americans for three days, at which point some of the Native Americans went into the forest, killed 5 deer, and gave them to the Governor as a gift.

Re: Settle this argument for me re Thanksgiving
Not a religious Holiday but religious people will celebrate any kind of Holiday and thank God for it. That does not make the Holiday a religious one.

Re: Settle this argument for me re Thanksgiving
i am slightly confused though. . . I understand that atheists would NOT be thanking God on Thanksgiving
but for those that do believe in God ( any God ) who are you thanking? Are you just "thankful" in general?
Like I said, for us it is a religious holiday - but we are Italian. . . we can make ANYTHING religious

Re: Settle this argument for me re Thanksgiving
Nope. It was designed for us to win favor with the Native Americans before we began slaughtering them and placing them on reservations where they could sell cheap cigs and build casinos all for our enjoyment.

Re: Settle this argument for me re Thanksgiving
It's a day to celebrate America and how lucky we are. I don't see it as religious in the least bit.
