are there any postive articles about this form of treatment?
sure there are
the majority of psychiatric facilities used to do this kind of thing
It now ILLEGAL in all forms and considered abuse. In NYS you can go to jail if you do it
You can find an medical "expert" to say ANYTHING!

So then do you believe in the Placebo Effect?
If it's helping, it's helping. Even if it is an illusion of helping.
I'm not saying this should be the first choice, but it sounds like they've exhausted other options so this is their last resort.
i don't believe it is helping at all...
and since for the most part this isn't done in all of NY state...there are other options out there
I understand your point that it can be dangerous.
But if the parents are saying it's helping and the patients are saying it's helping than how can you say it's not helping?
Some people say marijuana keeps them calm from anxiety, some people say cocaine helps them get through the day, etc. Just because something may help does not make it healthy or right.
This seems terribly archaic and sick to me.

Re: Shock Treatments
While I understand the behavioral principle behind aversion therapy, I do not support this form of treatment, if you can even call it that.
My main issue with shock aversion therapy is that there is no attempt made to understand the purpose of the behavior. The point is not that a child is throwing things, hitting, etc., the point is that they are trying to express something that they do not have better means to express. The therapists need to try and understand where the behavior is coming from, and work on the underlying issue. Chances are, once they extinguish a behavior using aversion therapy, the child will develop a new "negative" behavior to replace it, and then when does it end?
