Short cervix... Should I be concerned?

Went in for my 32 week appt last night and sono tech told me my cervix was short --- 1.8cms. She said that it is an indicator of early labor and that i should be focusing on resting. She asked where i worked and said i should be considering wrapping it up bc i commute to manhattan over an hour each way.
When the doc came in he went through the usual stuff, told me the baby was 3lbs and 12ozs, and that was it. He didnt even mention the short cervix. When i asked he said not to worry about it "i just need to make it to 35 weeks"
Would this concern you? Would you be requesting to be put out of work? I read this and now im worrying. I dont want to have the baby before 36 weeks minimum!!!

Re: Short cervix... Should I be concerned?

Honestly, it would concern me if my doctor's goal was 35 weeks. As far as I'm concerned, unless you have some predetermined condition, are on bed rest, etc. the goal should be full term which is 37 weeks. A baby born at 35 weeks is still considered premature and would probably have at least a short visit to the nicu.

If I were you, I'd speak to your dr about what his expectations are and how you can be the most proactive to keep that baby in as long as possible. Good luck!!!

I agree with this. I too was diagnosed with a short cervix around 26 weeks. The lowest mine got was 2.2 CM which they said was not too bad. After that, they put me on progesterone tablets daily and I was monitored every other week until I was 32 weeks with a sonogram etc. Sorry, I don't want to worry you, but I would definitely follow-up with your DR to find out what their expectations are and what can be done to keep the baby in there as long as possible! I am just about 36 weeks and everything is fine with my baby! I am sure you will be fine too!

Good luckj and FM if you have any questions!

Short cervix... Should I be concerned?

Since you are past 28 weeks they tend not to worry about a short cervix too much. I had a cervical check last week I think(it was last week)!? Because I was actually contracting during my NST(currently 32 weeks) but I have a history of preterm labor. If you were to go into labor the chance of survival is a little above 90%. A lot of the ladies on here had them (short cervix) prior to 28 weeks and that is usually when bed rest is a factor and emergency cerclage is needed.

The constant travel for you may be a factor for preterm labor. I would definitely stop if possible due to a short cervix. I would definitely ask the doctor for his opinion.

thank you for all the responses... im wondering if those who had short cervix (shorter than 2cm's past 32 weeks) were on bed rest or continued to work etc until the end. TIA

Re: Short cervix... Should I be concerned?

My cervix started shortening at 16w when it was 2.6 ... normal is 4. Tried modified bed rest and progesterone supps. That didn't help me. I had a Cerclage at 17w and started full bedrest. My situation was complicated by pre-term labor contractions 5 minutes apart that I wasn't feeling at 24 weeks and I believe my cervix measured around 1.7 then. I spent a week on hospital bedrest, and then went home on strict bedrest for the remaineder of my pregnancy. Towards the end of my pregnancy, they said my cervix was "unmeasurable". My water broke at 31w6d and my twins were delivered then.

They spent 3 weeks in the NICU.

I would be very concerned with a Dr. who's goal is only to get you to 35 weeks.

I think you should seriously consider taking your Drs advice and stay off your feet as much as possible. There is a huge difference in the amount of pressure on your cervix from standing/sitting/laying down.

Maybe you can arrange to work from home?

Short cervix... Should I be concerned?

i just got out of the hospital due to having contractions and a short cervix (1.4). I'm only 30 weeks and was told as well that the dr wanted to get me to at least 35 weeks. I think 5 weeks is a long time at this point and maybe that is where the dr is coming from (i was only about 29 when i went into the hospital) 5 weeks ahead is better than behind. I'm not sure why he wouldn't have put you on bed rest at this point as I did the same - commute to and from manhattan with over a 1.5 hour commute each way. I'm not even allowed to work from home in bed with my laptop. He doesn't want (and i don't need) the stress. The longer this baby cooks the better we are. It's completely scary and I hope I can hold out. I don't know the difference between 1.8 and 1.4 but the hospital nurses said 2.5 is the norm range and then i started to panic...id say to sway on the side of caution even if it's just for a few weeks!

All of this makes me very concerned. He was very nonchalant about it saying to keep doing as i usually do....
Seems odd that im commuting in and out of work and your doc doesnt even want you to work from home.
Im calling him tomorrow to talk this through.... seems so odd.
