Should I be letting this get to me? (MIL Related)

My MIL is obsessed with her best friends adopted grandson. For years I have heard all about Julian. My MIL has a bum arm, so I have wrapped all of her X-Mas presents for her for the past 3 years (didn't this year since I moved out of state). And every year she buys this kid a ****-ton of toys. Well this year is HER OWN grandsons 1st X-Mas and what does she buy him? She buys him 7 pairs of pajamas (which he doesn't even need since I already bought him pjs for his size) and a cheesy baby toy! I'm really annoyed! Do I have a right to be or should I just be grateful for what she got him??

I want to say be grateful for what you got, but what I mean is is she kidding me? That would bug the crap out of me.

I would get the recepits and return the pj's.

That would send me over the edge. My mom will staple the gift recepit to the tag on the item she gives you. My MIL has to "dig up" every one she has.

Chat Icon 7 pairs???? OMG Marie, usually I'm the one to give people a break on the gift-giving, but that's just odd. And try not to compare with the friend's granchild, that'll just drive you (more Chat Icon) insane. I don't get what she's thinking with such a weird gift, but your MIL seems a little off on propriety at times. (I think I remember her wanting to be at your Level II right??? WeirdChat Icon)
Anyway, I'd definitely be annoyed, but moreso because I wouldn't be able to say anything, given that it's DH's mother. Just curious - what does HE think about that gift????

OK then, there's your answer!!! Since Dh doesn't find anything wrong with this, and it's HIS mother, practice this Chat Icon I know it's fake and phony and totally annoying, but since NOTHING good can come from an argument on this one, just put on your cheesiest smile, thank her, and move on. Then vent about it to us; and YOUR mom Chat Icon

I think I would be upset unless I knew that the other family could not afford anything, and then I would let it go. Do you know what she gave the other child this year? Have her circumstances changed?

The other family is way better off than my husband and I are! Abd since I didn't wrap her gifts for her this year, I'm not sure what she gave him! She still spent the same on me and my DH though!

My In-laws drive me NUTS too! Yep it would annoy the hell outta me...

After DH's parents left, Joe threw some of the stuff out.... it was either creepy, scary, or just crap....

THE DOGS ATE THE FACE OFF OF A DOLL, and they thought NOTHING of wrapping it and giving it to her, since "kids trash everything anyway". And the Rudolf slippers with the red noses eaten off, or the riding pony that makes noise (for a 3 month old) that FIL stuck in her face while sleeping (INCHES away) and set off to make noises, to wake her up because it was gift time. This was on Christmas morning, when we had to have breakfast at our house, because we won't take her over there (chain smoking, dogs that like to bite, and chew EVERYTHING), they set the time for 9:30, they didnt show till 11 Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon .

My gift from them..... A 5x7 cow plaque, "since you am breastfeeding, and gained weight from the pregnancy, I saw it and thought of you"

Dh called FIL an A Hole for that, and then threw it out... FIL thought it was funny and dug it out of the trash!!!! Chat Icon

sorry to hijack your thread, apparently I needed to vent!

normally I'd be like...whatever but the fact that she spoils another child that is not her grandson, I'd be hurt.

I'd be annoyed too.

DS is the only grandchild on both sides. My parents totally spoil him. FIL is very well off, but isn't nearly as generous with gift giving. I was kind of surprised a few weeks ago when FIL's only gift to DS for his 1st birthday was a book. DH said when he was a kid, his family usually made a bigger deal out of Christmas so I figured FIL would get DS a few toys. I was wrong. DS got 2 books for Christmas. Meanwhile, FIL's 4.5 year old son with his 2nd wife got a huge amount of toys. I know son vs grandson is different, but I would've thought he'd be a little more generous towards his only grandchild. Maybe she feels bad that the adopted child was 'unwanted' and is trying to overcompensate. Hopefully she'll get better as DS gets older. In any case, I would just try to return the pajamas to whatever store they're from and get a credit. If not, donate them somewhere. If she asks, tell her that you either returned them or donated them because he didn't need that many pajamas. Here, it's NOT the thought that counts because there was no thought.

I get gifts I dont' want all the time without receipts and I either get a credit or donate them - I don't need gifts and refuse to keep things I can't use. SIL decided that she would buy clothes for our unborn DD in various sizes, didn't bring receipts, and yet neglected to actually consider that when the baby is 3 months old, it would be SUMMER and didn't need little baby sweatsuits in size 3-6 months. We got a credit from Kohl's.

Did your MIL's financial circumstances change?

I would definitely be annoyed. I personally don't like asking for gift receipts if they are not provided. I just try to return it to the store. I don't want the gift giver to know we returned their gift.

My MIL likes to buy DS things that I specifically say we don't want/need. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
