Should I see a doctor or nutritionist? Long but advice please

As some of you may know I am trying to lose weight (ultimately I'd like to lose 40-50 lbs) but my goal now is 20. You have all been a great help!

I have
-reduced my white flour/sugar pretty dramatically
Increased my legumes, veggies and whole wheat/ whole grains
added pistachios into my diet and will continue to add other nuts into my diet (I had been allergic but recent tests look pretty good for some nuts)
-increased protein

I work out a solid 4 times a week, sometimes 5 for an hr. each time. Doing a good balance of cardio and weight training at the gym (classes).

It's been about a month and I am down about 5 lbs. I feel good mentally but I look exactly the same. Clothes don't fit better and I am starting to get discouraged with the rate of loss.

I am on a mild steroid called 6mp and take Humira injections for Crohn's disease. I am starting to wonder if this is affecting it at all. Or maybe now that I'm 35 it's just harder? Anyway am I expecting too much? Will I start to see a difference if I keep this up? Should I speak to my dr? What's your take on my situation? ANY advice is appreciated!!!

I think 5lbs in a month is GREAT. Slow but steady weight loss is what you want to aim for. Even so, I don't think its ever a bad idea to speak to your doctor about your weight loss goals and rule out any other issues that might prevent you from losing at a steady pace!

You sound like you are doing a great job though!

I agree with Colleen about 5 pounds a month. It really isn't healthy to lose much more than that.
That being said, I would focus on your calories in versus calories out. While the changes you made to your diet are very healthy, and they're obviously going to aid in weight loss, ultimately the main idea is to eat less than you are burning. MyFitnessPal is a great, free place to track your food intake. It can become obsessive, so I recommend only using it briefly in order to get a sense of portion sizes, calorie counts, etc.

I second this. I think the calories in/out point is a great one because healthy foods are wonderful, but if you are eating more calories than you are burning, you won't lose. Doesn't matter if its calories from McDonalds or hummus and raw almonds. I am so bad with that because I love to eat and sometime I OD on healthy food and think its "not that bad" when it is, lol. I am on steroids for asthma and I didn't gain on them, but I was really strict with calories because I was so worried about gaining. My doctor told me that the steroids don't cause the gain, they just make you more hungry, so I made sure to keep my calories around 1400 a day. I use MyFitnessPal.

ditto to this. I was just like you, working out hard 4-5 days a week, eating healthy and the scale wasn't budging. Once I started myfitnesspal and tracking my calories, I was AMAZED at how much more I was eating in calories than I ever would have thought. I have seen much better results with it. I will say though, 5 lbs in a month is still really good! It's recommended that people lose 1-2 lbs a week when dieting so you sound right on track.

Thanks so much everyone. I just I stalled myfitnesspal on my phone and will start tomorrow. Seems easy enough. I am also going to schedule a physical and speak to my dr. about it. I appreciate the input!!!
