UPDATE**The worst advice from a "doctor" ever (long but worth it)
**UPDATE at bottom***
Today I got what had to be the worst advice from a doctor ever. I went to one of those walk in medical places b/c I had the start of what I believed to be a UTI. (DH's birthday was earlier this week, so I know that our celebrating definitely caused it) Anyway, it's a Saturday of 4th of July weekend. I knew the docs on duty were probably not the greatest, but wanted to get some meds for the UTI and be done with it.
The doc asked me if I was on any medications. I told him yes, that I was on prenatal vitamins b/c I'm BFing. He shook his head and said, "I never understood that, but anyway." (Can you say red flag?)
Then he confirmed my suspicion of a UTI and prescribed two meds for me. I asked him if these were safe to take while BFing. This is how the conversation took place from here. Warning: I am NOT making this stuff up!
Doc: I don't think these are a problem to take while BFing, but if you're not comfortable, then don't BF for 3 days.
Me: I'd rather not supplement since I've never given DS formula, can you just check that these meds are safe for a BFing mother to take?
Doc: Well, you don't have to give formula, just don't BF. Solids are enough, no?
Me: I don't think so....BM (or formula) is the primary source of nutrition AND hydration for an infant. How will I keep him hydrated in this hot weather?
Doc: Can't you just give him juice or gatorade for 3 days instead?
Me: No, I can't. Again, can you please look up these meds before prescribing them to me? There must be alternatives if these are not safe for me to take.
Doc: (goes to look them up and tells me they're safe for pregnant and nursing women)
I then leave, call my OB at the emergency on call number and leave a message. She calls me back and says DON'T TAKE THOSE MEDS, THEY'RE NOT SAFE. She then calls in a Rx for me of alternate antibiotics I can safely take. She also told me they're not safe for women who are pregnant!!!!
I am going to call back tomorrow to let this doc know that he gave me the wrong advice and that he should really get his sh*t together. He could really do major harm to a fetus or infant.
Crazy, right?
***UPDATE*** I called the doc and he wasn't in. I spoke with someone else and that doc said that I was absolutely right and he shouldn't have prescribed those meds to me given my circumstances. I told her about the juice and gatorade comment and she was silent, then sighed, then said, "Thank you for telling me, I'll speak to him." I think now, I'm going to write a lengthy letter and see who/where I need to send it to. I'm just so nervous that this doc will continue to prescribe meds that aren't safe for a fetus/infant.

Re: The worst advice from a "doctor" ever (long but worth it)
Lesson learned: ALWAYS question a doc and go with your gut. Something about him rubbed me the wrong way and I didn't trust his advice or ability to prescribe me something that was safe to take. THANK GOD I checked. I'll def. update this thread after I call tomorrow. What an idiot!
Does anyone know how I can make this more "known" in the medical community that he is giving such harmful advice? (malpractice?)

How old is your child that this Dr. was saying to give Gatorade or let the child survive on just solids?
Calling the OB is always best.

DS is 8 months old. Juice or gatorade is definitely NOT an option for him.

No way. And even when it is time for those things, you are not going to just make a sudden switch.

Terrible!! Just curious...what did he prescribe first? Was it Cipro...usually first choice for UTI.

Yes, it was Cipro and another drug too - Pyridium. My OB said that Cipro is NOT safe for pregnant or BFing women. There are no studies on Pyridium.

Re: UPDATE**The worst advice from a "doctor" ever (long but worth it)
Unfortunately, that is pretty typical of those quick clinic type places they definitely DON'T generally attract the "better" doctors. Scary isn't it? I'm not sure the OPMC is the right place for that sort of thing. I always double check anything a place like that gives before I take it - but they are good if you need a quick strep test or something and your regular PCP is closed.
