Since a few LIFers are considering getting chickens-some pics!!!!
I'm so thrilled that the green movement is encouraging people on LI to try things like chicken keeping.
So for the people that have already FM'd me about it & for anyone else that wants to see what pet chickens look like, here you go!
We got ours by mail, here they are when they first arrived
when they are babies they have to be kept very warm & they spend a lot of time sleeping
as they get older they get distinct chicken-alities & they like to play
This is our boy Jack keeping an eye on them when they were still young
kids & chicks are a great combonation
they like playing dress up for Easter

they love to scratch around and eat all bugs
believe it or not, they like to get a suntan
this is there house before we painted it
can you tell which egg came from the store?

Do they make a lot of noise?
We only have hens, they don't crow but they sometimes "sing" after they lay their egg. It only lasts about a minute or so & it goes like this "bawk, bawk, bawk, baaaawwwwk, bawk, bawk, bawk, baaawwwwk"
Then they go back to very quiet clucking & talking to eachother. It usually happens between 9 am & 1pm.
All of my neighbors have actually said they love it when they hear them because it makes them feel like they live in the country.

"chicken-alities" - love it!! 
I grew up in Chicken Country, USA so I remember lots of my friends having them.
But they didn't live very long lives.

Lisa, you could build a covered run so the hawks couldn't get to them!

here are a coouple of links to set ups with a netting over them, you can build them our of those tall green yard stakes-VERY EASY
chicken run
shed & run
our you could do something totally simple like this
chicken hutch

I couldn't get over the difference in the quality of the eggs. THe fresh ones' yolks were so much darker than the store bought one.

My DH once mentioned getting chickens, and I cringed. (Sorry, I'm from the Bronx!) But I gotta tell ya, these are beauties and I can't wait to show him these pics. We certainly have the room for them, DH grew up next to a farm and his grandparents ran one for a bit yers ago. He is gonna love this!
