I love it! Genevieve has the greatest face ever!
This is going to sound like a stupid question - do they ever let you pet them or stroke them? Or are they skittish and solitary when it comes to humans?
Not a stupid question at all! Daphne, Sunny & Marguerite INSIST that I hold them , they will jump up on my lap immediately like little lapdogs waiting to be rubbed. Daphne likes to go in the car too. Genevieve lets me carry her all around, the other day I went to bring my new neighbors eggs & I brought her with me. I just held her under my arm the entire time, she was happy to let everyone pet her. She flies up on my arm if I put it out. Penny loves to be held, so does Olivia. Olivia would rather hang out with people or with our dog than the rest of the chickens. Mimi is my only girl that I can say truly dislikes human attention, but she's a lovely girl. Since we've had them from the time they were chicks they are very comfortable with humans. They think I'm their rooster They have marched in our town parade, they have had their pics taken with Santa at the pet store.
If you've ever watched the animated movie Chicken Run it really tells the whole story about their "chicken-alities". Genevieve for example gets easily panicked, sometimes I'll go out to feed them in the morning with a my hair wrapped in a towel. She doesn't recognize me(all the others do) & she'll run around like a crazy person sounding the invader alarm they are truly interesting animals to keep.

So in response to all the FMs here is some general info
A must have book "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens"
A couple of great websites

I don't think so, but I might be biased.

I wish I had bigger property. I love them. And the eggs look incredible compared to the store-bought.

Kelly, do you know if you have to have a certain propery size to keep chickens?
Someone in our neighborhood has at least a rooster because I hear him all the time. But I was told they had him illegally. (I don't know the reason they have him, I hope its not for cockfighting)

almost every township on LI allows 2-10 hens, NO ROOSTERS even on tiny pieces of property. Some incorporated villages & a few other areas don't allow "livestock" of any kind. I live in Brookhaven & you are allowed to have hens, but no roosters. Two of my neighbors(not too close by) have roosters but they aren't for fighting, just part of their flock. Nobody complains so they get to keep them.

not a silly question, people ask me all the time. No I'm not, I try to be a Locavore...meaning I *try* to eat things that can and/or were grown or raised as close to LI as possible. I'm not a believer that humans do not need meat. I eat a little red meat, lots of chicken, some turkey & pork & lots of eggs My chickens are not the same breed as the kind we would eat, some people think its freaky that I still eat chicken. I buy mostly all organic or all natural meats.
