Since bashing teachers went on for 12 pages, can we discuss how Bloomberg is trying to $crew the NYPD, FDNY, etc.?
Besides trying to take away more from the NYPD (such as the variable supplement that is already in their contracts), DH told me tonight that Bloomberg wants to change the policy for NYPD, FDNY and Corrections Officers killed in the line of duty.
Currently if they get killed in the line of duty families get benefits (health coverage), lifetime pension (which is 50% of salary) and unions/widow & orphan fund provide scholarships for kids to attend state schools.
Apparently in the new hire contracts he is trying to (or already has) changed it so families will only get benefits, etc. for 3 years. Bloomberg has publicly stated that NYPD, FDNY and Corrections Officers are no different than other city employee and should not receive any "extra" benefits.
As with most of what Bloomberg does, I find this appalling. I find it appalling that many years ago it was an honor to serve in the NYPD, people waited for years to work for force. Yet today, the city's own Mayor along with most of the residents think they are joke and put them down constantly. It's an incredibly sad world when people don't respect the people who risk their lives to keep you safe and make the community a better place.
ETA: I know there has been controversial conversations in the past about NYC cops but regardless of whether you like or do not like the NYPD, I think we have to acknowledge that if an officer is shot and killed while on the job the least the city can do is take care of the officers family.
UPDATED ABOVE with correct benefits info. It wasn't lifetime salary, it was lifetime pension! Although I am sure that won't appease everyone either

It seems I am better off dead (or my family is).
No one will take the job so that means no cops or fireman or the quality of the applicants will be less than desirable.
If I would of know what this job really was about I would have never taken it (12 years later).

He completely disgusts me, how he is willing to sacrifice benefits - what kind of candidates does he think his cuts are going to attract to the NYPD? Who does he think is going to be guarding NYC 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 years from now when all the current hires with the good benefits are gone? The semi-hoodlums they are hiring now? You can have misdemeanors and still get hired to be a cop.
I will, fortunately, be far away from the city by the time all the qualified hirees have retired. It will be a free-for-all, let's not even take into account terrorism.
*And I'm not sure he has done it yet - the new contract has not been signed off on, NYPD is without a contract since last summer.

I had no idea that was the benefit that their families got. Honestly, I think it's excessive.

ur right its completly excessive getting paid about 65k a year to walk around the worst neighborhoods while praying u dont get killed.. their life span after retirement is about 5 years... the sacrifices the POs family makes etc .. the sacrifices the PO makes protecting civilians.. just for someone to say ok thanks for taking a minimum paying job, getting killed protecting me - someone u dont even know is really sad
i can go on and on but wont even bother with comments like this..

I am pretty sure if we suffer a LOD death, our families do not get lifetime salary. They would receive a lump sump payment from a few different organizations that support widowed families of fallen officers and get one year's pay for the family as well, but no lifetime. I've never heard of the state school for the children either. I know after retirement, we keep our benefits for ourselves and spouses until death (kids until they are adults) so maybe that is something that they extend to the families.

Which part to you find excessive? The fact that the families receive any benefits at all or a benefit that the PP stated in particular?

What's disgusted me is the way Bloomberg is trying to pit teachers against police and fire, implying that teachers will need to be laid off if the PD and FD do not give up their $12k.

This is a choice though, no one makes you become a cop and risk your life for low pay. I never understand comments like this.
In MY opinion, it's excessive. Obviously my opinion shouldn't mean anything to you because I'm a stranger on the internet.
I don't agree with the lifetime salary and all of the kids going to college for free. Shouldn't life insurance play a part in supporting a family after the death of a spouse?
Just curious, do Nassau and Suffolk and village police get these benefits also?

How much time do you have on the job? DH is in his 11th year and is now a Detective. Maybe it varies by contract. If he dies LOD, I get a lump sum payout from insurance. I will also get his salary for life.

No the families should receive some benefits but I find lifetime salary, lifetime benefits ( is that health insurance? retirement?) & schooling for free excessive.

1. That is disgusting. 2. How much $$ does it really save the city? Thankfully there are not too many officers killed each year. 3. I hope the NYPD officers on the Mayor's detail that protect Bloomberg everyday know this so they can step out of the way if someone tries to hurt him.

Yeh, they also make about $30+k year. more than NYC cops base salary. Most Nassau/Suffolk cops make $150k+ a year.
Noone ever wants to bring Suffolk & Nassau cops up though when the LI tax issues come up

I have 13 years on. Maybe it's specific to the DEA because for Sgts. we don't get lifetime salary, and my DH who is in the PBA- I've never heard of that. The death benefits that families receive whether LOD or natural while still active duty, is printed in the SBA calendar. Nothing is stated about lifetime salary. I'll have to ask around about this... Maybe I should push DH to get on the Det track! Just in case. I kid. I kid.

if everyone had this train of thought there would be no law enforcement or it would be a really corrupt law enforcement agency. It is a "perk" for the low salary they get paid and the service they do.. if u take this away along with all the other perks they get who will take the job? people who have priors or perhaps the perps themselves?
i just dont get why its a big issue if a child of a parent is killed in the line of duty is allowed to go to a city/state college for free when we have people living on welfare getting the same thing
im not sure about nassau and suffolk county police and their benefits

The ironic thing that NO ONE knows about is that $12k variable supplement retired police and fireman get is because decades ago the city borrowed $110M from the NYPD and FDNY unions because they were broke. The city invested that money and in return instead of repayment they negotiated a definded pension benefit. Basically that money is the city paying back a loan they borrowed YEARS ago. But their trying to get out of that too

I love how the politicans blame the unions....don't we elect you to manage the $$ well?

Posted by nrthshgrl No the families should receive some benefits but I find lifetime salary, lifetime benefits ( is that health insurance? retirement?) & schooling for free excessive.
I understand the risks taken, I understand the pay isn't like what a teacher is making (although my old boyfriend is doing pretty d@mn well & is ready to retire) & no I don't get what it's like to be married to a police officer. I'd like to know what that costs the State.
Fortunately not too many city cops get killed these days so it's not costing taxpayers too much
The lifetime benefits is because most people dont have a job that can kill them. Most people dont put on a bullet proof vest to go to work. Most people dont run into burning buildings. Most people didnt dig through the rubble at 911 or run into the towers to rescue people.
Than again, in this $hitty society, we are not even taking care of the 1st responders from 9-11, let alone the military that come home from war injured and flucked up.
