first, I really hope you are not taking any of my comments to be demeaning b/c I certainly don't mean them to be and I don't want what I am saying lumped into what others are saying, since you quoted me and said that.

secondly, I dont' really understand the math in all of this to please bear with me.

if the city is not contributing any money, then what is the problem.

where is the 12k coming from? from the unions? then how could the city even get its hands on it?

it seemed to me from what I've read that the city agreed to pay 12k out from the dividends of the investment, but MY question is this...is this fund EARNING enough to guarantee that each person gets that 12k every year, and if NOT, WHERE are the make up funds coming from?

bc if they ARE coming from the city, any place OTHER than the dividends of the fund, the mayor IMO still has a valid point.

I am still hoping someone will help me understand this b/c this is not my strong suit.

thanks.

No, not at all about your comments. I was referring to many posters that have made many demeaning comments that are totally unnecessary. I think the moment anyone starts making generalizations, you run into problems.
I actually quoted you because I was trying to answer some of the questions you had there.
The city hasn't contributed any money since 1996. How they have used the money and the profit made is a good question and perhaps one that will be addressed eventually.
These unions are telling him that the city hasn't contributed in 20 years so why he wants to cut on something that the city hasn't funded for that amount of time. Originally when the agreement was made, the amount of money was not set but I believe sometime in the 80's(I can be mistaken on timeline), it was set that it will be $12k for every retiree. The unions had given to the city more than 4B as the city needed the money to invest back when the original agreement was made. Obviously with the state of our economy, everyone is looking where to save to make it work. These unions are upset because he's making it seem that the city has been providing this money to them all along.
I said he has plenty of money and if he cares so much for the city that he wanted to be elected a third time and change the terms, he can totally put the money for the deficit as an investment until the state recovers.

YUP YUP! Thank you for making the uninformed (because they are not married or related to civil service workers in uniform) understand more clearly. I cant get myself involved very much, as i tend to get upset regarding these things. Yes i am the wife of a NYPD 2nd Grade Det. So thank you for putting it into terms everyone can understand.Chat Icon

I've been out all day and haven't gotten a chance to read the last few pages, but I wanted to quickly tell you that we received the IAFF newspaper today and I want to share an excerpt from the opening letter.

"It has become a badge of honor for governors and other public officials to blame fire fighters for the fiscal problems confronting our country...
Now there are people like Newt Gingrich who are tying to convince lawmakers in Washington, DC that states should be able to declare bankruptcy so they can walk away form their moral and legal obligations to our members. Mr. Gingrich and other current and former members of congress are entitled to a very generous pension plan and free health care for the rest of their lives, but he's not suggesting that politicians should make sacrifices. Hes suggesting that the retirement security of fire fighters and paramedics be sacrificed."

UNBELIEVABLE!!!! I'm sickened!!!! For those of you who thought the LOD death benefit for FDNY/NYPD was excessive - this just make you as livid as it makes me.

There are other places to make cuts - here is a prime examples! Make these people pay THEIR fair share! Make them make THEIR sacrifices!!!

Instead, the cowards suggest that we rob men and women who've worked in excess of 20 years protecting the public of their retirement.
