Since bashing teachers went on for 12 pages, can we discuss how Bloomberg is trying to $crew the NYPD, FDNY, etc.?

Currently if they get killed in the line of duty families get lifetime benefits, lifetime salary and kids will get to a state school for free.
I had no idea that was the benefit that their families got. Honestly, I think it's excessive.
Which part to you find excessive? The fact that the families receive any benefits at all or a benefit that the PP stated in particular?
Ah someone who gets my aversion to eyerolls. Thank you!
No the families should receive some benefits but I find lifetime salary, lifetime benefits ( is that health insurance? retirement?) & schooling for free excessive.
I understand the risks taken, I understand the pay isn't like what a teacher is making (although my old boyfriend is doing pretty d@mn well & is ready to retire) & no I don't get what it's like to be married to a police officer. I'd like to know what that costs the State.
Really? You understand the risks taken? Please feel free to explain how you have come to understand this, I would LOVE to know. You arent' married to NYPD or FDNY, and you aren't either. So please, explain.
Then you can further explain how it is excessive to compensate the men and women and their families that have sacrificed their lives for strangers. Yes it is their job, yes they knew signing up, but they also signed up with the benefits due to them.
You can tell me you understand when your husband joins the department under a contract to protect his family and then the employer wants to take it away from him if he dies for that employer.
You can tell me when your husband doesn't go to sleep next to you at night and you know he's in the projects doing verticals waiting for someone to put a gun in his face. You can tell me when your husband comes home with red eyes because cried all the way home because he held the skull together of a 27 year old shot in the head on the way to the hospital, or he was on the rape of an 8 year old, or he spent 3 days not coming home from a murder. You can tell me you understnad when it's someone you love digging through the wreckage at Ground Zero looking for any signs of life and the next day going to the funeral of a fellow fallen officer...for 3 MONTHS STRAIGHT. THESE ARE THE MEN I LOVE, the men in my life..my Husband, Grandfather, Father, Brother and Cousin.
You can tell me when you are the one that holds your breath when the phone rings and he's at work or the police car drives by. You can tell me you understand when you hear a report of an injured/killed cop and you hold your breath, cry and pray. You pray it isn't yours and you pray for the family that it is. You can tell me when you have to press his dress uniform when he has to go to a funeral of a fallen officer, and you wipe his tears as he puts his uniform on. You can tell me how you understand when you look at the picture of the fallen officer on the tv or the paper, even though you didn't know him, because we are all a family and at the end of the day we all bleed blue.
You have no clue about the sacrifices the men, women and families of the NYPD and FDNY, all other MOS in other departments, or the Armed Services, make everyday. Don't speak of what you don't live.
Who are you to say that the benefits received by these people that make the ultimate sacrifice are excessive?
I'm married to a brave, selfless man who has put himself in front of death for strangers. I'm not strong enough to do what he does, but I'm strong enough to be his wife..and it's not easy.
You do it. You live this life. Are you up for it? When you are and you do, get back to me about how you understand.

Posted by twinkletoes807 I have 13 years on. Maybe it's specific to the DEA because for Sgts. we don't get lifetime salary, and my DH who is in the PBA- I've never heard of that. The death benefits that families receive whether LOD or natural while still active duty, is printed in the SBA calendar. Nothing is stated about lifetime salary. I'll have to ask around about this... Maybe I should push DH to get on the Det track! Just in case. I kid. I kid.
You're making me nervous now I'm going to have DH double check.
Ok. I made DH check
Survivor's of slain officers under Tier 2 (hired from 1973-2009) received pension for life (pension for those that don't know is 50% salary).
Survivors of slain officers under Tier 3 (hired after July 2009) receive a lump sum payment of 3 years total salary.

I revised in my OP.
It's not lifetime salary, it's lifetime pension. And the Unions (which the cops/fireman pay into themselves) provide scholarships for the kids to attend state schools.

Pension, that they would've received had the officer lived, pension they paid into their entire career.

Think also $250 life insurance policy and some money from the federal government if the crime falls under the federal system.
I don't even think about myself or my husband dying. I am more worried about my husband driving home from work at 2:30am or myself being on the LIRR (my train derailed in 2008).

Dont you think the family of a private industry employee killed in the line of duty would sue the company for more than the what this would all cost?

Re: Since bashing teachers went on for 12 pages, can we discuss how Bloomberg is trying to $crew the NYPD, FDNY, etc.?
The ironic thing that NO ONE knows about is that $12k variable supplement retired police and fireman get is because decades ago the city borrowed $110M from the NYPD and FDNY unions because they were broke. The city invested that money and in return instead of repayment they negotiated a definded pension benefit. Basically that money is the city paying back a loan they borrowed YEARS ago. But their trying to get out of that too
My DH also works for an agency of NYC but isnt NYPD or FDNY..he has been working witbout a contract for 4 yrs and just like the FDNY the govt has been borrowing off his pension for years but he doesnt get that "extra" money the FDNY.Bloomberg is just a complete jerk!!!!

3. I hope the NYPD officers on the Mayor's detail that protect Bloomberg everyday know this so they can step out of the way if someone tries to hurt him.
Don't think this does not go through my mind EVERY time Bloomberg decides he has some fabulous idea about trying to take penions/benefits.

Re: Since bashing teachers went on for 12 pages, can we discuss how Bloomberg is trying to $crew the NYPD, FDNY, etc.?
oh goodness.
If there is one thing that bugs me, it's the hero mentality of every single profession out there.
Doctors are heros. Military are heros. Cops, FDNY are heros. Teachers are heros. DNSY are heros.
People are people. We all bleed whether we work at Burger King or are a policeman. Not only do people know what they are getting into when they pick a career, so do their families. It's not easy all the time, and yes, it can be scary, but the life of one person is not anymore greater than then next.
Look, it's a career. People are paid to show up and do their job. It comes with benefits and risks. Some careers have better benefits due to the risks. Plain & simple.
How many people would honestly work at all if they didn't have to?
I just find all the glorifying that goes on unsettling.

This is a choice though, no one makes you become a cop and risk your life for low pay. I never understand comments like this.
See, and I don't understand comments like yours.
I'll quote my very dear, blue-uniform wearing husband:
"You don't get it if you don't live it."
So therefore trying to expalin it to you is a waste of time.

I find your trivializing people risking their life for you unsettling.
A doctor that can save a life = hero My brother who risked his life in Iraq for your freedom = hero Cops/Firemen who go into work every day knowing they might not come home = hero Teachers who shape the minds of our future = hero
There ARE certain jobs that are different than others. How dare you take that away from people.

ur absolutely right.. when u need someone to help u when u have someone hurting u or a loved one or ur home is being robbed, just call the accountant or the mailman next door.. he/she is just as qualified as the cop who puts a bullet proof vest on everyday.
why bother calling 911???? i dont get it.. tell those poor souls who risked their lives searching in the wtc for OUR family members putting themselves in harms way that they arent heros and they did it for nothing.

There ARE certain jobs that are different than others. How dare you take that away from people.
What I mean is, everyone has it hard in a different way from the next person.
For example, a fire fighter may risk his life in a burning building, and a wonderful teacher who is working in dangerous area may end up being a victim of an unspeakable crime.
A cop may be hours away from his family, whereas someone in the military may be gone for a year or more.
My point is, no one can understand where anyone else is coming from.
We forget we are all in it together, **and no one is better than the next***
It's the top members of society who DON'T do these jobs and that are screwing things up for everyone making and changing policies, and everyone gets angry at each other, instead of at the real problem.

Bloomberg makes his own rules. He even changed term limits And Commissioner Kelly is so far up Bloombergs arse and doesnt stick up for the cops the way he should because he'll probably make a run for mayor.

If it is my post that you are referring to as "glorifying"..that is not what I was thinking when I wrote it. I was trying to point out to the poster who thought she said she "understood" the sacrifices made that she really does not.
I'm not glorifying my DH's job, it's the life we lead, but don't tell me you understand when you don't live it. Just like I don't understand the life of a doctor, of the doctors wife, I don't understand the life of a lawyer, I'm not a lawyer's wife, I don't understand the life of a mechanic, plumber, electrician or anyone else, becuase I'm not them and I'm not their wives.
And the bleeding - well, no, it's not the same. It is very difficult to explain..when you are part of something where your family is at risk everyday, even though you know it and you signed up for it anyway, you have a feeling of closeness of family, even with other family members you don't know, because you all share in the same thing. Even in a subconscious way you cling to each other. So when I said we all bleed blue, I mean we bleed for each other, if one of us is cut, we all share the pain of what the other is going through. That is what I meant.
It is a feeling that is hard to explain, I've lived it my whole life, I can't explain it, but it's different than any other job, than being in an office, being in retail, even flipping burgers at Burger King.
