"The lifetime benefits is because most people dont have a job that can kill them. Most people dont put on a bullet proof vest to go to work. Most people dont run into burning buildings. Most people didnt dig through the rubble at 911 or run into the towers to rescue people."
UMMM... oF THOSE 2,100odd people killed in the towers, how many were cops and firemen. How do you define having a job that could kill them? When terrorists attack, are they looking to take out police or fire stations? NO!
Oklahoma City. 1993 WTC attack, 9/11, it was non union people that were the targets. Today, they are still the target.
So does a cop or fireman have a more dangerous job??? Let's start today, and run a tally. Once the police and firemen death tally over 2,500, we'll then place them at the "higher risk" level.

1. IrishLass - I think I love you.
2. NYPD and FDNY die in LOD RISKING THEIR LIVES TO SAVE OTHERS. Don't you remember - They are the ones running in when you are running out? "Never forget"? Sound familiar? They don't die LOD fishing or mining.
3. MOST LOD benefits are funded through the UNION - a UNION that they pay into. If you are so jealous - join a UNION.
4. THEY ABSOLUTELY DID NOT KNOW WHAT THEY WERE SIGNING UP FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DH has 12 years on FDNY. He applied to be a FIRE FIGHTER. He wanted to FIGHT FIRES.
He didn't anticipate 9/11. He didn't anticipate losing HIS ENTIRE CREW.
He didn't anticipate the survivors' MEDICAL CONDITIONS FORCING THEM INTO EARLY RETIREMENT.
He didn't anticipate that he would be the "FRONT LINE ON TERROR" for NYC - that's right - FDNY and NYPD are your "FIRST RESPONDERS TO TERROR"
He didn't anticipate having to be trained in CPC suits - you know, CHEMICAL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING - in case a biochemical attack happens in Penn Station.
He didn't anticipate having to be trained to administer an ANTIDOTE TO NERVE GAS AND OTHER CHEMICAL WEAPONS to his colleagues in case their SUIT FAILED.
He didn't anticipate the FDNY telling him the antidote had been designed for YOUNG SOLDIERS and that they DIDN'T KNOW IF IT WOULD WORK ON ANYONE OLDER THAN 30 AND THAT IT COULD KILL them.
No, he didn't anticipate ANY of this. Not the nightmares, not the health problems, not the bull$hit....
He wanted to FIGHT FIRES.
Oh - and guess what? His new job description DID NOT COME WITH A RAISE.
Wake up people - don't judge things you have NO IDEA about.... YOU DON'T have all the facts....
well said hon!!! and yes i think i'm in love with irishlass too!!!!

anyone who quoted my posts and took them the wrong way seemed to not see the further explanation.
my husband is in the same line of work as a cop would be, except he gets sent overseas in a war.
He might not be gone overnight in a bad area in the city, but he's gone for months at at time.
i'm not bashing anyone. i'm saying regardless of jobs, WE ALL HAVE IT TOUGH & WE NEED TO BE ON EACH OTHER'S SIDE AND NOT THINK THAT ONE PROFESSION IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER.
WE ARE NOT THE PROBLEM, IT IS THE SYSTEM. So instead of fighting one another, why doesn't everyone come together?
When teachers say others don't get it, or when cops say no one knows what it means to "bleed blue," or military families say you have no idea what it is like for your spouse to miss the birth of your child, etc, NO ONE can really judge anyone else until they are in their shoes. At the END OF THE DAY, we are all people, all dealing with issues. We all bleed the same.
To assume that I don't "get it" is absolutely ridiculous.
I admire you tremendously, I don't know if I could live with my DH going off to a war zone being gone for months at a time, NYC is enough for me. I consider myself a strong woman, I am not sure if I am strong enough for that.
Please do not misunderstand what I meant by "bleeding blue" - it was how the police family, and we are a family, with flaws and all just like every other family, feels about each other. It has nothing to do with being better than anyone other job, that they are more important than anyone else or that anyone wears a cape or that they are heros and someone else isn't.
It's that we are all in the same boat together and can sympathize and understand the situations we all live in better than others can. The SO's of the officers understand each other and "the life". If you don't live the life, you can't entirely understand.
The phrase "blue blood" - it's not just the show - or indicating rich people, LOL. I have a long police family history - my Dad was always told he was a blue blood - my family was referred to in NCPD as blue bloods because they are all cops.
Just like I have no idea and I'd never even utter the words that I remotely understand you or your DH's sacrifices. Quite possibly you might feel a closeness or sense of family with other families that your DH works with, I really don't know, I don't live it.
And I agree - I think the teachers, cops, fire dept, sanitation, corrections should all get together and say - NO! We've had enough.
Unfortunately Bloomberg has been successful the past few years of pitting one union against the other and pointing blame at one union for the other unions cuts. He is anything but noble.

WELL - since you asked.......
FDNY has been informed that terrorists ARE INDEED targeting first responders (fire fighters and police officers). That is the explicit purpose of secondary and tertiary devices - to take out the first responders.
Remember the bomb in times square last year? The reason the perimeter around the car was so large was because intel indicated that secondary and tertiary devices to injure the first responders may exist.
Like I said - people THINK they know, but they have NO IDEA....

Please please please then read the whole thread and go back. There is a full explanation of what "lifetime benefits" and where it comes from.
Police are local financed and military is federal. It is an excellent question for the federal government. My guess is that there are so many more deaths in the military then the police department, but I really have no idea.
If you want a job with benefits for your family if you are killed at work, start a Widows and Orphans Fund, Orphan Scholarship Funds, start a union where your union takes care of it's members like the PBA and FDNY do.
Only the medical comes from NYC. All the other benefits come from the PBA which THEY PAY INTO.

I agree as well.
BTW:
Military get lifetime benefits:
1. The Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) provides a continuous monthly income to certain eligible surviving dependents. Active duty pay and allowances stop when a Soldier dies. SBP pays the Soldier's eligible survivors an inflation-adjusted monthly income for life as long as the survivor remains eligible.
2. The spouse and minor children of Soldiers who die in the line of duty (service-connected death) are entitled to tax-free compensation paid by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The benefit is called Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC).A surviving spouse or former spouse continues to receive SBP benefits for his or her lifetime.
Their kids get a college education:
Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA) Program provides education and training opportunities for eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-related condition. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training as well as correspondence courses for spouses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.
They get housing for a year:
The Department of Defense makes special housing benefit provisions for spouses and children of Soldiers who die while serving on active duty. Eligible family members residing on base may continue to reside in base quarters for up to 365 days after the Soldier's death. Eligible family members not living in government housing receive a housing allowance for up to 365 days after the Soldier's death.
They get a Death Gratuity:
The U.S. Army provides a one-time lump sum Death Gratuity of $100,000 to the primary next of kin of a Soldier who dies while on active duty. Its purpose is to help the survivors in their readjustment and to aid them in meeting immediate expenses incurred. The gratuity is paid by the last military command of the deceased.
They also get Social Security benefits.
And they deserve EVERY SINGLE PENNEY.
As do the widows of FDNY and NYPD killed in the LOD protecting the citizens of NYC.

Re: Since bashing teachers went on for 12 pages, can we discuss how Bloomberg is trying to $crew the NYPD, FDNY, etc.?
I didn't read all the threads on here, but quite a few of them made me sick. As the wife of a fireman in FDNY and the daughter and sister of police officers, it's disheartening how people are so nonchalant about what cops and firemen do. It's nauseating to see the media bashing public employees as if we are the reason for the economic downturn and all the state's problems. But then to come on here and read these blase attitudes, well, that makes me ill. I'm a teacher and reading the anti-teacher thread didn't make me feel as bad.
But I'll answer the question. I think Bloomberg is an a$$, but he knows how to get the media going and the public on his side. Every year he's threatening to lay off teachers and cut stuff from the cops and firemen. He always manages to stir stuff up in the media about pensions and benefits so he doesn't look as bad going after cops/firemen/teachers.

Your right, when you or a loved one gets cancer, ask the guy at petco remove it, not the doctor I work for. The doctor that sat in a library for 15yrs to study how to save lives.
When
The next bombing happens(god forbid), and ur family gets killed, dont ask my cousin to revenge their lives.
When you get into the most minor accident, dont call the cops, write the report yourself. When someone breaks into your home, dont call the cops to dust for prints, u do it urself. When you witness a crime, dont call the cops, you chase the guy with the gun.
When ur house is on fire, DONT GET OUT, go around back and grab the hose. Dont call the fdny.
And dont send your children to school, u teach them, prepare them for their futures.
Just make sure you tell them to not take any of the jobs uve listed above, they arent the important ones that keep life going.
You get my point. Give me your address, ill tell my hubs to not respond to your calls.
My son stopped breathing, and it was that over receiving benefits cop that did cpr on him, not you.
revenge their lives....

Wow you actually want to compare what military get to the excess cops etc get. You are kidding right.... And FTR I am a vet. So I know the numbers not just what words say and it may sound good on paper but anytime you want reality talk to a military widow...the widow of a regular soldier not an officer and you'll see the $$$ is not as great as it sounds.

That is not what she did, if you read through the posts someone said that military received nothing. She only looked up what they got.
AND...Please explain...why you think it's excess, when THEY PAY INTO IT? Majority of what is received is from THE PBA!!!!! There are PBA dues, funds, etc. that ALL the cops pay into.
Also, MOST of the time, the children's scholarship funds are set up at what is called a 10-13 party - Officer in Distress. I have been to too many of these - but cops come from all boroughs to help out the family and all the money goes to the kids and the family.
I'll give you an example of how the cops take care of their own - ON A SMALL SCALL - no 10-13 party- last year when I was diagnosed with breast cancer my husbands partner took up a collection at work to "help us out" - no one asked him to do this, he just did it, because they take care of each other. My DH does not work in a big pct, he is in a small squad which I cannot post. The guys chipped in almost $4000 to help us out. Thank God majority of the bills were covered by the benefits - the expensive ones from the PBA. But it was a helluva thing for them to do. If I had needed it, they would've had a 10-13 for us, but I didn't. Thank God.
You think it's excessive? That's because most professions don't take care of their own. The taxpayers and the city aren't funding the scholarship benefits and most of the benefits..and the pension, life insurance and retirement plan (401K/403B), social security, would've been received just like anyone else.
If it's not coming from your pocket why do you care?
You want it? Start a Widows and Orphans Fund that ALL employees pay into. Start an Orphans Scholarship Fund that everyone pays into. Have a fund raiser and get EVERYONE to chip in for someone that's in trouble that you work with. It won't happen. I have worked in the private sector my entire life, over 20 years, no one takes care of their own like police and fire.
You know that feeling of family I keep talking about, how our blood runs blue...this is exactly what I am talking about. There is strength in numbers and we are a huge strong family that takes care of our own.
If you want it, do the same.

Do not misunderstand my post.
I was in NO WAY comparing or complaining about what the military gets. I have the utmost respect for the men and women who protect our country and I know they do not get the $$ they deserve.
Please look back in the thread. People argued that the military do not get lifetime benefits so therefore neither should FDNY or NYPD. I was simply clarifying that military do get benefits and that they deserve them and so do our NYPD and FDNY. I'm not saying they deserve what the military gets.

Someone should take Bloombergs pension away!
I am sure Bloomberg doesn't get a pension for being mayor. The man is noble enough to only make $1 a year to do an extremely difficult job. Yes, I did call him a noble man. He has shown it as recently as the whole snow plow debacle. He took responsibility for the sanitation department slacking off to make him look like a fool. How many people here would have been as noble as that?
Sorry but what does this have to do with the topic?

Really? You understand the risks taken? Please feel free to explain how you have come to understand this, I would LOVE to know. You arent' married to NYPD or FDNY, and you aren't either. So please, explain.
Then you can further explain how it is excessive to compensate the men and women and their families that have sacrificed their lives for strangers. Yes it is their job, yes they knew signing up, but they also signed up with the benefits due to them.
You can tell me you understand when your husband joins the department under a contract to protect his family and then the employer wants to take it away from him if he dies for that employer.
You can tell me when your husband doesn't go to sleep next to you at night and you know he's in the projects doing verticals waiting for someone to put a gun in his face. You can tell me when your husband comes home with red eyes because cried all the way home because he held the skull together of a 27 year old shot in the head on the way to the hospital, or he was on the rape of an 8 year old, or he spent 3 days not coming home from a murder. You can tell me you understnad when it's someone you love digging through the wreckage at Ground Zero looking for any signs of life and the next day going to the funeral of a fellow fallen officer...for 3 MONTHS STRAIGHT. THESE ARE THE MEN I LOVE, the men in my life..my Husband, Grandfather, Father, Brother and Cousin.
You can tell me when you are the one that holds your breath when the phone rings and he's at work or the police car drives by. You can tell me you understand when you hear a report of an injured/killed cop and you hold your breath, cry and pray. You pray it isn't yours and you pray for the family that it is. You can tell me when you have to press his dress uniform when he has to go to a funeral of a fallen officer, and you wipe his tears as he puts his uniform on. You can tell me how you understand when you look at the picture of the fallen officer on the tv or the paper, even though you didn't know him, because we are all a family and at the end of the day we all bleed blue.
You have no clue about the sacrifices the men, women and families of the NYPD and FDNY, all other MOS in other departments, or the Armed Services, make everyday. Don't speak of what you don't live.
Who are you to say that the benefits received by these people that make the ultimate sacrifice are excessive?
I'm married to a brave, selfless man who has put himself in front of death for strangers. I'm not strong enough to do what he does, but I'm strong enough to be his wife..and it's not easy.
You do it. You live this life. Are you up for it? When you are and you do, get back to me about how you understand.
I would love to give you a big, fat cyber kiss right about now.
Thank you for stating that so beautifully.
Sincerely, an overpaid, over benefitted teacher who is married to an over paid, over-overtimed, over benefitted cop.

I agree...why was Bloomberg's pension brought into this?
bc bloomberg wants to change contracts so that the families of pos and firefighters killed in the lod only get 3 years benefits..... benefits that are really those pos and ffs PENSIONS. pensions and benefits that they paid into and would have gotten whether they were alive or dead. it's like taking their pensions away so someone commented that maybe someone should take his away.

Our blood runs red to protect all including YOU.....but its not blue so based on your last sentence I guess you dont care.
Thank you OP I responded to...for clarifying.
