I would mail it back also.

It's the right thing to do, and there are also people who do check on these things, and it may come back to bite you,

honestly - i'd just deposit it

if they come looking for it, just play dumb and say you didn't realize and send the money back

worse case, you get caught, but nothing will happen if you play dumb - it's not your job to catch their mistakes

best case, you have $300 that you didn't have before

I would deposit it and see what happens-

I am sure most people would do that- even if they wont admit to it

I wouldn't. If it's not mine, I don't want it. I honestly think most people wouldn't deposit it.

I agree.

On another note (as intimated in other posts on this thread) - since when does poor customer service mean you can take money to which you aren't entitled?

At the very least, I think you should call to inquire why they sent the check.

if you're going to deposit it, put it in your savings account, that way you can collect interest on it, and then if they ask for it back, you have it to give.

I wouldn't send it back to them I would just rip it up. That way when they do their annual audits they will see that the check is still out there and cause them aggrivation (sp?) having to look up who it went to, etc.

I'm shocked at how many people say to deposit it. This is what's wrong with this country and why everything is so expensive. It's called stealing and the rest of us have to pay for it.

I agree. Honestly, it would never occur to me to deposit the check. It is stealing and you will be caught. Even if you pay it back later, it is still stealing.

I would write "void" across the check and mail it back to them with a little note. Maybe also include a link to this post so they know that not everyone is as honest. Chat Icon

send it back.....

you're already re-imbursed.... despite the hassle and the unprofessional mistake creating the double payment, it's still not money meant for you.
the honest thing is to at least call them up and ask them if they want it back, or if you should destroy the check.

(and yes, I AM a goody-two-shoes....)

I'm not. Chat Icon

The check is in an envelope in my organizer, waiting for me to figure out if the stamp price has gone up yet or not. I have a letter drafted, detailing my previous communications with them, names, dates, and how I feel about their customer service/billing departments.

I purposely left my own opinion out of this thread because I wanted honest answers. A poll is always the best way to get honest replies, since it's anonymous. Chat Icon

I had already discussed this privately before I posted and I did think that a lot of people would say to keep it. But if you count the "other" votes as people who would NOT keep it, there is still a healthy number of people who would do the honorable thing.

I wonder - if the company in question was not so big, if that would change things for people. I think a lot of times, big business is looked at differently, that people feel much less respect for them. If it was some kind of charity, or Mom-and-Pop, I don't think ANYONE would say to keep it. At least I hope not!!

Re: Small moral dilemma - WWYD? [Poll]

Another way to think of this though, in terms of big company vs, small company is that when accounting figures it out someone somewhere is going to get in trouble for it. So someone making $30K and working long hours, a regular person, could get in big trouble for the mistake. And this could happen if it's deposited and also if it goes unaccounted for. Sending the check back is the right thing to do (that's why I chose other), so they can accurately check their records.

You may be angry with the big bad company, but there are really people involved who are struggling to make it, just like we are.

Re: Small moral dilemma - WWYD? [Poll]

I think stealing is stealing, no matter how large or wealthy the rightful owner is... The fact that the rightful owner is rich or successful (or a large company) shouldn't really alleviate anyone's guilt over it.

I'm constantly amazed at the sheer number of people who think they are entitled to what someone else (or some other entity) earned -- just because the other party has more money or is more successful. That sentiment certainly isn't directed at the OP or anyone in particular. It's just my general observation lately... I'm amazed at the sense of entitlement I've been seeing lately (not on this board - in the real world Chat Icon).

Re: Small moral dilemma - WWYD? [Poll]

I think 'theft' is seen with shades of gray to most people.

Have you ever taken home a pen or a pad of paper from your company's office supply? Found change in the soda machine and used it to get a free drink?

It sounds silly to use these examples, but I was told in a seminar by my previous employer that even a 75 cent soda still amounts to theft. Which, technically, it does.

But many times these are seen as petty thefts that a lot of people would overlook.
