Smoking Ban spinoff...

Smokers:
1. Do you toss/flick your cigarette butts out the car window?

2. Do you put your cigarettes out on the street/sidewalk?

Non-Smokers and/or Smokers:
1. Does it bother you when smokers toss their cigarettes out the window?

2. Does it bother you when you see cigarette butts on the ground, whether it be the street, sidewalk, grass, etc.?

Non-smoker here

1) Yes it annoys me to see smokers flick their cigarette out the window. That is why they make ashtrays. Keep your trash inside your car.

2) I hate when I see cigarette butts on the sidewalk or the street & even on my grass. I especially hate when it is in front of my house. Why should I have to clean up after someone that decides it is "convient" to dispose of their cigarette on the street???

Also Ditto. I get very irritated when I see someone toss them out the window or on the ground. It is called a trash can, and it was made for a reason. It is just gross.

1. im not bothered by people that throw cigs on the street

2. i am not bothered by cig butts on the groud- i never think twice about it
however if they were on ym driveway it would annoy me a little but otherwise i dont think twice about it. its better than throwing a plastic bottle on the street or something.

I am a smoker,
I toss the out of the window because I hate when the car/house smells of smoke, and if I sell the car I dont want a dirty ashtray.
I dont however put them out on the street or sidewalk, I will put them in an ashtray (many places have them outside).

Non-smoker here:
1. Yes - esp when it hits my windshield! Toss it in your ashtray like a normal human being. You don't throw your trash out the window from McD's or such, don't do it for cigarettes!

2, Yes, it means someone was too lazy to place it in an ashtray!

Re: Smoking Ban spinoff...

Non smoker, and yes both things you mentioned are DISGUSTING! If you don't want your car to smell like an ashtray, then don't smoke in the car. If you throw your cigarette out the window or on the ground not only is it littering but some animals can come and eat them. I actually saw a show the other day that said there was a park where squirrels were addicted to nicotine because they ate so many cigarette butts that were on the ground.
I'm sorry but if you have to smoke then at least have the decency to dispose of your butt in an ash tray.

And obviously it makes me angry when I see people tossing them out a window or putting them out anywhere other than in the garbage.

Why is it ok to toss them out the window? How is that not considered littering? I think a lot of smokers get it in their head that cigarettes are "bio-degradeable", but it takes a long time for the cigarette to disappear.

Imagine what things would look like if all the non-smokers started tossing our straw wrappers out the car window. Chat Icon

And I hate walking down beautiful village sidewalks and seeing butts everywhere. It's just so sceevy.

Non smoker here. I agree it is disgusting when its tossed out the window and tossed on grass, sidewalks etc.
My biggest pet peeve is seeing butts on the sidewalk and the garbagepail/ashtray is 10 feet away.

Re: Smoking Ban spinoff...

Non-smoker

Besides the obvious littering aspect, which everyone is addressing, I am also annoyed by the extreme dangers associated with these habits. There are numerous brush/forest fires caused by careless smokers discarding their cigarette butts along the road. These fires cause lots of damage, and potentially kill people.

The other danger, is when people flick cigarettes out at night. There's this large spark on the road, and most of the time, I wind up swerving, thinking it's some kind of metal on the road. I really don't want to drive off the road just because someone doesn't want to put their garbage in a garbage can.

These may be extreme examples, but they are valid ones, and they do happen.

I'm a non-smoker as of the last 21 hours, and yes, seeing butts all over the street annoy me sometimes depending on where I am.

But I just wanted to mention that my car doesn't have ashtrays, so that's why I would throw my butts out the window. That won't happen anymore since I quit again, hopefully for the last time. Chat Icon

Yes, I agree with this also... These things can happen... Especially on Long Island with the brush fires.

And anything on the road that is sparking- can cause a problem that can end up in someone getting hurt or worse.

Also, it can cause damage to the car itself-- when someone throws it out the window and it hits a car it can cause the car's paint to get a mark on it or it could fly in anothe rperson's window if they are behind them which has happened to DH... So that's not good for safety or the car's paint/ upholestry.

Re: Smoking Ban spinoff...

I smoke and yes, it's disgusting to litter.....somewhat related, I was driving on the Sagitkos parkway and this guy ahead of me threw his garbage out the window (it looked like a McDonalds bag). I thought it was so nasty.....also, a friend of mine said she saw a dirty diaper at Jones Beach.....totally friggin nasty.....

For anyone else who has this problem (cars not coming with ashtrays) They sell portable ones at any Auto car store like Pep Boys or they sell them at most car washes. If they get dirty, you can always buy a new one- they are not very expensive. The ones they sell at DH's car wash are like 3 or 4 bucks.

HTH!! I hope you don't need to know this as I see you are quitting Chat Icon Chat Icon but just for anyone else with the same problem... B/c some cars don't come with ashtrays.

I used to smoke and I used to flip the butts out the window and on the ground. Someone told me (and I stupidly chose to believe) that they are biodegradable. Chat Icon

Now, I hate both. My neighbors throw all their butts in front of THEIR OWN house. It is so gross. When I walk my puppy, he picks up butts everywhere on the street. It really pisses me off.

I am hoping to see the neighbor's kids playing with their parents' butts in the street one day - maybe THEN they will get the hint.

Re: Smoking Ban spinoff...

100% non-smoker, and actually an anti-smoker

I don't want anyone to throw anything out a window..it is garbage. period.

I don't know why people think it is okay to put any liter on a street. Digusting.
Your habit= your garbage...throw it away.

I would like a 100ft. ban on smoking near office doors/store doors. Why should my daughter or I be subjected to smoke in order to enter a store? It kills. period. My daughter's health is worth more than someone's need for a smoke right near the door of a store.

Re: Smoking Ban spinoff...

I have to say (as a non-smoker) that throwing butts out on the ground has never bothered me YET I'm extremely annoyed by littering (will add that to the pet peeve post). However my friend who smokes always complains about butts on the ground, that it's the same thing as litter, how come cigs are accepted?

I'm sure after this I'll change my view....

Re: Smoking Ban spinoff...

I used to smoke and I would throw it out the window or on the ground if there wasnt an ashtray available, like outside a store or restaurant. I didnt want the butts stinking up the inside of my car anymore than it already smelled.
