parks i can maybe understand, because children are around and thrashing cigg butts on the ground can ruin the beautiful landscape but streets i dunno?

ITA. I am a non-smokers. I cannot be around anyone smoking or I will start coughing.

That being said, I see no problem with people smoking outside in a park, etc.. as long as they don't blow their smoke in my face as I cross them in the street or dump cigarette butts all over the ground.

I am not a smoker either, but people smoking on the stret or park does not bother me,as long as they are considerate and put their butts where they belong.

Last year, RI ruled no smoking at beaches, you can get a fine. I thought that was a little outrageous--and they had a hard time enforcing it...

I don't care about people smoking in the street, but smoking in doorways sould be BANNED. How annoying is it to leave your office and have to walk though a funk of smoke. I hate it.

kinda like the ban on smoking in bars in nyc they orginally had such a hard time with it but as the years went on ppl got used to it...

of course at some "hole in the wall" places that still dont abide, but they get fines when they are caught...

keep making examples of ppl and itll catch on that u cant do it.

DH and I are former smokers and we are the worst when it comes to smelling cigarettes. WE HATE IT! However, I have no problem with someone smoking in an outdoor public place except for arenas or concert venues with high concentrations of people in one place. Come to think of it, I don't like smelling it at the beach on a crowded day either. Chat Icon

Re: smoking bans in public places

As an ex-smoker, the (fresh) smell of smoke doesn't bother me or my asthma. I actually like it. I hate the smell of musty smoke like on someone's clothes or hair when you've been in a bar all night. So I don't care much about smoking outside since there's less of a chance of that.

But the cigarette butts... It would be nice not to see them on the ground, in gutters, in the brush on the side of highways. I think there's a general apathy when it comes to disposing of cigarette butts responsibly. In that way, I don't mind any public ban, but if I was still a smoker, I'd probably be ******.

i love the smoking ban as well, i hated coming home smelling like an ashtray when i dont smoke

as for the bars that still allow it, they can risk losing there license and the bartender gets fined...

theres a bar i used to go to that my friend bartends at and shes gotten fined a few times, but the owner actually wants to let ppl to continue to smoke, they will go on a ban for a few weeks and then not care anymore and let ppl smoke again...

i drew the line at this place when my brand new jeans kinda caught on fire becuase the person behind me flicked their cigg butt in the cuff of my jeans....

i hooted and hollered at the bartender and he told me i cant ask ppl not to smoke the owner wants ppl too! So i said well i dont expect to pay for my drinks for the rest of the nite, or next week since im celebrating my bday here.

i even have a pic to share...the pic wont upload grrrrrr

Re: smoking bans in public places

the worst was the small hole in the wall bars that was filled with smoke. my eyes would sting from the smoke and i'd get headaches. i would much rather have a headache from drinking too much than from cigarette smoke haha

Here in the UK we have had a big problem, even though everyone loves the smoking ban, THE PUBS SMELL LIKE OLD MANS WEE WEE. Now they have to bring in the smell of tobacco so the drinking establishments don't stink.

Now when you go out on a Friday night, all the bars look like they are JAM packed, but they aren't really, everyone is outside smoking their fags.

Re: smoking bans in public places

DH and I are smokers.I don't mind the ban in restaurants anymore (although I was mad when they first imposed this). We don't smoke in the car with DD, we certainly don't smoke in the house. I never smoke in a doorway, I don't smoke when I take DD to a park... really the only place I smoke is in my yard, lol!

I don't know how I feel about not smoking on the street as long as you're not blocking a doorway and are disposing of your butts properly. I don't mind the smoking ban everywhere else, I guess I'm used to it now.

I remember smoking in Friendly's when I was a teenager, lol... seems gross to me now!

I am a fan of the ban indoors. On the public streets, not much anyone can do about that.

Re: smoking bans in public places

I am a nonsmoker and love the ban on smoking indoors, especially at bars. I hated going out and then waking up smelling disgusting the next day. I remember one girl I lived with would always shower after getting back just because she hated the smell so much. With that being said, I do not think it is right to ban it outdoors, with the exception of a playground area or a large arena as a pp stated.

Re: smoking bans in public places

I don't like to be around people smoking, which is weird since I grew up with a family that smokes. But I think banning it on streets is a little extreme. I can maybe see parks because, like a PP said, there are children around and throwing the butts on the ground ruins the beautiful landscape. Banning it in the streets would basically mean people could only smoke in their own houses. I think they have the right to smoke if that's what they choose.

Re: smoking bans in public places

I have recognized a huge difference in my reactions (both vuluntary and involuntary) when I DO encounter smokers, but I just sneer privately and turn around trying to avoid it.

I don't think I would support legislation that would ban it, but perhaps do a silent jig of glee.

When I ate in a restaurant in PA, I nearly gagged because we had to walk past the "smoking section" and I was simply not used to having the smell of cigarettes eminating from a concentrated area. Smoking really has no place in my life.

i am a smokerChat Icon but a considerate smoker. i am very careful about not offending others and would never smoke in entrance areas where non-smokers pass or are present. i also do not throw my butts on the ground or out the car window. totally rude and disrespectful.

however, banning smoking in public areas is virtually impossible to enforce and no, i would not be a fan. however, the positive is that i would mostly likely quit.
