Re: smoking bans in public places
I'm OK with people smoking outside. I just try my best to walk around it. When they lifted the ban inside restaurants and such, I will say I was Very, Very happy. DH, My Family, and I are all on a bowling league and I HATED with a passion coming home smelling like I was the one who smoked a pack and a half. If you are going to light up, don't do it near me or my DS..Walk ahead of me or stay behind and catch up.

Re: smoking bans in public places
I'm for it personally. People have the right to smoke...in their homes...away from others. I don't mean to sound insensitive. However, risking other people's lives/health is not within anyone's right.
Personally I go into coughing fits when I am around cig smoke. It would be nice to walk into my job (a hospital BTW) without having to walk through a billow of smoke. I have been surprised how many people will not shield their smoke when they see my sister (who is 9 months PG) walking by. It's a health hazard.

I remember smoking in hospitals, can you imagine? For a long time, there were still those little metal ashtrays in the armchairs of the waiting rooms.

how is, "I much rather hang out with a bunch of people and their dogs in a public place!!!!" NOT a real opinion? to translate, she is stating that she WOULD be supportive of the ban.

Re: smoking bans in public places
I can understand parks. There have been times where I've seen parents light up while pushing their DC on a swing or catching them on the slide.
I hate when I take my DS to his karate class and there's parents that go outside and stand by the OPEN front door and smoke. All the smoke comes right back into the building.

Re: smoking bans in public places
I think it is a good idea if they have designated smoking areas for the people who do want to smoke. Like if they banned smoking at Jones Beach, but left one area (parking field) a smoking area.

Re: smoking bans in public places
DH and I are both smokers, but if we go outside to smoke we stay away from where there is traffic, if I am not smoking a cigarette i cant stand someones smoke blowing in my face so I am very conscious of this
ETA: I dont really mind the ban in restaurants and bars

I think until the US doesn't support big tobacco and the exports/sales to all over the world, we are hypocrits.

Re: smoking bans in public places
I like the idea of a ban. I know it will be hard to enforce, but I hate walking by peope who are smoking, its so gross. Maybe if it is harder to find places to light up a cigarette, it will encourage people to quit smoking.

parks i can maybe understand, because children are around and thrashing cigg butts on the ground can ruin the beautiful landscape but streets i dunno?
I agree with parks, although I think that the larger parks could have an area for smokers (not unlike how Disney does it), but the streets are public. I hate it, especially when I am out with DS, but I do not own the streets, ya know?

i am a smoker but a considerate smoker. i am very careful about not offending others and would never smoke in entrance areas where non-smokers pass or are present. i also do not throw my butts on the ground or out the car window. totally rude and disrespectful.
however, banning smoking in public areas is virtually impossible to enforce and no, i would not be a fan. however, the positive is that i would mostly likely quit. I will agree that you are a very considerate smoker. We spent almost the whole day together before I realised you smoked. And I can usually smell it on someone from a mile away...but you had me fooled

I don't care about people smoking in the street, but smoking in doorways sould be BANNED. How annoying is it to leave your office and have to walk though a funk of smoke. I hate it.
ITA!!! I HAAATEE this. Everywhere I go- even the GYM- there's a cloud of smoke right outside the door. Gross.
ETA: I don't think they could enforce no smoking on the streets. BUT I would be 100% in favor of no smoking in parks, outdoor arenas, or within 25' of an entryway!

Re: smoking bans in public places
I think there is a ban a certian number of feet from a doorway, but no one follows it.
I am in favor of any and all smoking bans!
When I got out of state I freak out when I smell smoke inrestaraunts until I realize I'm out of state. I'm so used to no smoking in restaraunts and as an asthmatic with a cery sensitive respiratory system (and also as someone who just doens't like the smell in my hair and clothes) I am very appreciative of these laws.
